I will be visiting Kailua-Kona from sept 15th to the 29th (my wife and I visit for a couple weeks every other year, the only place in the world we return to for vacations)and would like to LISTEN to a local public kanikapila. My playing is no where near good enough to join in but I would like to see what one is like. I know there used to be a get-together in Keauhou on Fridays but I do not know if guitar is included (I thought it was Ukelele) and if so, when. If the idea of a novice player just watching and listening is a problem, I apologize for the offense.

On Wednesdays, up in Holualoa, there's a kanikapila at Sam Rosen's Ukulele Gallery (http://konaweb.com/ukegallery/index.html). While there are *mostly* ukulele players, when I was there last fall there was an mandolin, three guitars and KonaBob with his WalkingStick Bass (http://konaweb.com/walkingbass/index.shtml). They welcome folks who are sincerely interested (especially if you bring a snack treat to share!)--and I promise you don't have to be a good player; you can just strum chords and play along. They mainly use the blue "He Mele Aloha" book and go around the circle, with each person "choosing" a song from it--however they also had other tunes they played. I believe the time is 6 to 9 pm--parking on the narrow street is a bit crowded sometimes. KonaBob posts here regularly--ask him for more details. |

In addition to the Wednesday nights, You can find a lot of 'ukulele players at Willie Perrera's "lesson" on Friday mornings from 10 to 11. This takes place at the International Marketplace in the Old Industrial Area of Kailua-Kona. Songs and hula are featured. Several TaroPatchers are usually in attendance. If you are brand new to the Ukulele, come between 11 and 12. Willie teaches beginning 'ukulele at that time. There are several stores nearby which sell 'ukulele.
Per my friend, Dennis Lake - "In Hawaiian, 'ukulele can be singular or plural. Never add an s to the word!" |

Dave, I understand the feeling of being new to an instrument and nervous about joining in a jam group. But we all go through this, and the best thing is to join as soon as you can play a few chords in a few different keys. You will find your progress much quicker if you play with others. The help and encouragement of other people is the best spring tonic ever. Plus, if you play with others you learn to keep better time.Start by listening if you feel more comfortable, but it won't be long untill you're itching to join in. If you make a mistake, so what. I make plenty. Just ask Wanda. She's been listening to my mistakes forever. This is a jam we're talking about, not open heart surgery. And believe me, you'll be among friends. You just ain't met 'em yet. Paul |
