Aloha everyone.
After hearing Danny Carvalho play "Hawaiian Soul" a few times I've decided that I'd really like to learn this song next in my repetoire.
Did some research on the net but couldn't find much information on it....so I turn to the awesome knowledge that is this board for help.
Does anyone know the origional author of the song? Is there a story behind the tale? Words? Any tab available anywhere?
Mahalo nui loa for any kokua....

Look up references to George Helm.
He disappeared on a surfboard not too many years ago.
So far as I know, the song is about him and his disappearance.
Here is a wikipedia link:

Aloha mai,
This is a truly inspirational mele.
From Album (HanaOla Records) converted to CD (Cord International) "Hawaiian Eyes"
Hawaiian Soul Words and Music by Jon Osorio & Randy Borden Dedicated to the memory of George Helm
I can recall the way your voice would fill the room and we would all be stilled by your melody and now your voice is gone and to the sea belongs all of the gentle songs that you had harbored
Hawaiian soul how could you leave us You've not been lost at sea you're only wandering Hawaiian soul we sing your melody and send them out to sea You know the harmony
They say before you left to seek your destiny that older voices called and drowned your laughter but I believe you knew what you would have to be a beacon in the storm to guide us after |

Yes - and to hear Dennis Pavao sing it is doubly poignant, knowing that he also is now gone (and he was another famous Leo Ki'eki'e singer who supported Hawaiian independence, though perhaps not as strongly as did George).

Hawaiian Soul, a Hoku award winning song of the year, was written by my friend Jon Osorio of the duo John & Randy. Jon was another notable member of the Kamehameha Schools class of 1969. We had a lot of great musicians in our class. Jon is an associate professor and is now the director of the Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies at UH Manoa. He is still active politically and continues to perform every Saturday down at Hawaii Kai.
During the 1970s, there was a reawakening of the Hawaiian people politically and culturally. It was a time of change and for many of us we began to take those first steps down the road to self-determination. There was no talk of a Hawaiian Renaissance among the people within the movement. That was a term coined later in the decade by romantics. There was an awareness however and a definite sense among Hawaiian activists that we were in pursuit of a better Hawaii, which would benefit more of the populace rather than just a few.
For many the cost of taking a stand was high – there were broken relationships, loss of jobs, dropping out of school, and marginalization. And for two of those who were active in the movement George Helm and Kimo Mitchell, the price was their life.
George was perhaps the most well known and charismatic of the “Kaho‘olawe Nine”. The media made them sound like a bunch of crooks. He was a really really funny guy and a popular musician with the best falsetto ever. He was from Molokai and came to Saint Louis High School to study and play basketball. My brother Charlie and George were good friends; they played JV basketball, and were so fortunate to be mentored by Kahauanu Lake and Keola Lake for several years. George was able to bridge the gap between generations because of his music. He could break the ice between kupuna and the young Hawaiians at community meetings through song and word. Once he got going he could be a very eloquent and persuasive speaker. This is the George that Jon immortalized.

I've been fortunate to share a concert stage with Danny and he has performed twice for my classes. He has always put on an impressive show. His interpretations are solid, and his playing is very fluid and natural. I think his version of "Hawaiian Soul" is da bomb, i don't know if Jon O has heard it though. If you do get the opportunity to see him perform you will be in for a treat.

After hearing Danny play it at a Slack Key Festival, I was so taken with Hawaiian Soul that I worked out tab for it - as close to Danny's version as I could get - in order to learn it. If it is okay to offer this on TaroPatch.net, I would be happy to share this (free) with anyone who obtains the appropriate permissions.

Hi Mark, I emailed you sometime back about your tab for "Hawaiian Soul". I emailed you through taropatch and have not heard anything back. There seems to be a problem with the taropatch emails. Could you try to email me through taropatch? I am very interested in speaking to you about the song. Mahalo, Jerry |
