Aloha fellow taropatchers.
I am newbie to your site. I am orginally from Mt. View on the Big Island. My family currently lives outside of Portland. We are interested into moving to a smaller area...contemplating Salem or Eugene area. Noticed that there have been kanikapila in Eugene. My wife and I are basic strummers... Anybody out there pulling for the Salem area?

Aloha nobusan - welcome to Taro Patch. My husband and I are far, far from you -- Cleveland, OH, but I am sure you will be able to find folks with whom you can kanikapila in your neck of the woods. Plenty folks love Hawaiian music on the left coast over there.
Once again, welcome. |

Hi Nobu -
Welcome to the community.
I know of a few folks up Salem way who aren't active on TaroPatch, don't know if there is an active kani kapila scene or not-- but I'm sure folks would love it if you got one started!
Eugene has a swinging little scene, as you have noticed. But then Eugene-Springfield is quite a bit larger than Salem. Corvallis is a truly great choice -- halfway between Salem & Eugene and it is a beautiful little town with lots going on thanks to the college.
I'm further south -- between Grants Pass and Medford. Some of us happen to think that this is the proper place to live in Oregon, so you might consider it, too. Lots of music down here, too -- all kinds.
Good luck wherever you settle! |

If you're looking for better weather, try Bend. Bill Keale has a regular following there and there is a Hawaiian store and at least two Hawaiian plate lunch places. I spent a lifetime in Corvallis one year (Grad school) and it was depressing for anyone who had ever seen the sun. Not too much of a stretch from Portland, though. |

Welcome Nobu. Funny, your name is much like a girl that works at Kona Mix plate here in Bend. Her name is Shinobu. Yes Bend is the best. Great climate and lots to do. There is a halau here and a pretty good Hawaiian population. Plus we have an annual luau that features entertainers from the Islands. Have lived in the "Valley" and the weather can be very depressing with all the rain and fog. Central Oregon is, in my opinion the very best that Oregon has to offer. If you want a tour give me a call and come on over. We can "strum" a little, and my wife and I will show you the sights.

Kurt,
Mahalo for the info and invite. Knowing that there is a halau in the area is great. i do believe I have seen them at Uwajimaya's Hawaiian Days in Beaverton. My wife and daughter both used to dance. I have been to Bend....great town...but not sure if my keiki's like the snow. The rain and fog reminds me of my obasan's house in on the big island...all the noise on the corregated roofs. Will be having interviews in Eugene in the near future. Any haps in Eugene? |

Aloha Nobusan!
E Komo mai to Taropatch. We have a very, very wonderful kanikapila group down here in Eugene (we meet every second Friday of the month). Please come down and join us, ok? Also, email me so I can tell you more about Eugene, our halau here, and the Hawaiian music scene in general. You can give me your contact info and we can chat by phone, ok? We have lots of folks from the Big Island, too! Hope to hear from you soon.

Welina! Welcome to the patch. I live in So-Cal but I have an aunt in Beaverton. Rainy over there and cold in the winter. Hope you find a good place to settle. Oregon is a beautiful state to be in.
Should you find yourself in Cali, there are get togethers here as well. Give us a shout and maybe we can get something together. |

Mahalo to all you taro patchers for pulling for your area. Thanks for you input. Still in the process of researching places...seems like Eugene is centrally located to stuff....Bend, Portland, Ashland. Not sure of job opportunities though. Eh, Maggie..nice to know you guys have a kanikapila in Eugene. I do believe you are from Sweet Aloha? Saw your group up at Kalama. You guys are very talented. Your lead female singer is awesome. Truly a nice blend. |

Nobusan!
Great to have you check in again! Yes, I'm in Sweet Aloha. Thanks for your compliments! Please, if you come down to Eugene, let's meet and talk story, ok? I can give you the low-down on the area (I've lived here for almost 30 years). You can email me too through the TP profile and we can exchange numbers, etc. We've got 5 or 6 Hawaiian plate lunch places, some good Japanese, Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese kau kau eateries, plus a great kanikapila ohana over here. Folks are still friendly and the outdoor recreation is unbeatable! Hope to connect soon.
A hui hou, Maggie |

Those folks from Sweet Aloha are amazingly good. Oh, and all pretty cool people, too. |

Nobusan--Did you hear Gregg (Retro) play with "Da Uddah Guyz" on Sunday at Kalama (on stage and jammin' in one of the vendor booths)? Another amazing band with some pretty darn wonderful and talented folks, as well! - M |
