In response to the original question, I vote for pickup. See e.g. Maton guitars. Awesome plugged in, terrible unamplified.

I learned a valuable lesson several years ago at Gryphon in Palo Alto. I was playing a really nice Martin J-40 with the Fishman under-saddle pickup in it. I tried a couple of other guitars with the same pickup, trying to see how much difference occurred. One knowledgable salesman then handed me a Martin backpacker with the same pickup in it. Lo and behold, the sound coming out the amp was virtually the same, almost indistiguishable from the big high $$ instruments. That told me that the pickup determines the sound, not the guitar. If you want a better sound you have to blend in some microphone too.

Wow, there are some smart guys here. Pretty Cool! As a Sound Engineer, I'm inclined to go with the the thoughts that put the Sound Guy at the top of the heap. :-)

On the other hand, I remember promoting a show with Bill Monroe back in the mid 70s when I was just learning how to mix. All we could get was an ancient Shure Vocal Master - Remember those?? It was a stage mix; and after the preliminary set-up, (the band helped a lot!!!) I sat back and listened to the show.
Funny, how a great musician can transcend the worst sound system in the world.!!!! It's a lesson I never forgot. It's amazing how often an amateur band can get horrible sound and the sound is fantastic when the Pro gets up. ;-)

I believe the quality comes from the following order: 1st the Musician, 2nd. The instrument 3rd. the Mic. (If a Pick-up is used, then disregard the instrument!) Then the Mixer (etc), and finally the Speaker/Amp combo.

It can still be ruined by bad monitors.

Anyway, just a few comments. Incidentally, I'm new here, having just returned from Aloha Music camp. Hi Mark.

Unfortunately... Yes... Reminding me of those "Stone Tablet" daze.

Used one of those for several years with our Folk/Bluegrass band back in the day. One of the band members had built some Altec-A7 "Voice of the Theater" copies so we could get more noise out that little 100 watt amp in the Shure VA300.

Shame!! You forgot the Sound-Man!!!...

...Who screws up your carefully designed and tested sound with the EQ and Mix knobs on his desk, not to mention the heretofore secret (until Gary Larsen gave it away) "SUCK" knob.

Oh.. but I guess you DID cover it with:

the Mixer, etc

P.S. - Welcome to da Patch!
