Just wanted to ask if anyone else has heard anybody sing this song and use "o" instead of "ia."
Kumaka ka 'ikena o Hi'ilawe.
I've heard some people sing it this way. Gabby wrote it using "ia," 'ae?

Sorry, can't help you with the "o" vs "ia", but I thought you ought to know that Gabby did not write Hi'ilawe, even though it was his signature song. I think the author was Sam Li'a (corrected), I will have to look it up when I get back to broadband. Gabby may not have sung the original words either, plus there are a lot of verses extant and not often sung, even at the time Gabby first did it. Some accountings list as many as fifty verses. Others will have to fill-in and/or correct me.
Suffice to say, this song has a long and colorful history!

Refer to this post: http://www.taropatch.net/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5859 where Sam Li`a's granddaughter gives some history of the mele. Also, you may way to get Eddie Kamae's video Earth, Words and Aloha. Plenty people sing that song but do not say the words correctly.
Timing here is perfect because I am listening to Maunalua sing Hi`ilawe from their new CD. Bobby Moderow uses the correct words as they are on huapala. org.
There are other versions with lots of verses. Might want to go to mele.com and put Hi`ilawe in the search field. Listen to all the different renderings of this song. It is indeed an education. |

Lyrics and translation, according to huapala.org: http://www.huapala.org/Hi/Hiilawe.html
First line reads: Kûmaka ka `ikena iâ Hi`ilawe
Then I went listening to CD soundclips -- found that the "Hi`ilawe" heard here, does in fact use "o" instead of "ia": HAWAII CALLS / Hawaii's Greatest Hits Vol 2 LEDWARD KAAPANA / Led Live Solo NEDWARD KAAPANA / His Own Man DANNY KALEIKINI / Lu`ua at the Hilton Hawaiian Village ISRAEL KAMAKAWIWO`OLE / Alone in IZ World & In Dis Life RAY KANE / The Legendary Ray Kane & Wa`ahila GENOA KEAWE / In the Hula Style
...and that's when I decided this list was long enuff! |

Hahahahahahahaha!
Now on a slightly different topic, how many of you like the Sudden Rush version of this song? I love it; I think it's so cool! I know Alana, Keith, and Greg like it too. Anybody else want to answer that? |

I like it -- although my first reaction was "Sacrilege!". Then I asked Martin and Cyril how they and the family felt about it, and was told that Sudden Rush came and asked permission...which the family granted.
If it's good enough for the Pahinui `ohana, who am I to complain? |

Sudden Rush's version certainly is innovative. It is exciting that the younger musicians still remember the kupuna. It is good that they want to keep the "Hawaiian-ness" in their music, even though the style is very modern,
I do believe that Martin Pahinui lent his voice to that one specific cut on the CD. I am sure that at least he did background vocals. I thought I read somewhere, too, that it is not Gabby on there, that it is Martin. That I am not sure about, but for sure Martin is doing background vocals. |

Is there a link to the place where you read that, Wanda? Please let me know. Would love to read it. |

I was noticing that there were so many versions of this song once about a year ago so my wife and I sat down one afternoon and listened to 14 different versions that we have in our collection of music, both vocal and instrumental. It was quite an afternoon! |
