I want to thank everyone that made suggestions for cheap guitars on O'ahu. Dan's Guitars was not witnhin in my budget and they didn't want to work with or talk to me. Coconut Grove's Fred (I think is his name) picked out a guitar that was well within my budget and fit with my guitar playing style as well! He more than helped me. I left the guitar with my son to help with his recovery....an idea I got from Wanda-Much Mahalos to all involved.

PS-I was there for the storm-scary-exciting-wet

The guys at Coconut Grove have always been very nice to me. Harry Koizumi is a wonderful player and a fine teacher who works upstairs from the shop. And Hungry Ear next door is the first place I look for CDs, especially those bargain priced used gems (then I go to Jelly's and bust my budget).

I didn't go upstairs this trip and I didn't have time to shop. My son felt the healing powers of music when I played for him though. He was in a lot of pain and the music helped him relax and the pain dissapeared for a time.
I will definitely be going to CoconutGrove again.

I think the guy who helped you is Fred Oshiro. He is a great musician (I believe he is a Berklee grad) and a real nice guy.

I think you are pono on that one. Fred was working on instruments in the store and let me try as many guitars as I wanted. When he grabbed a guitar of the rack for me and handed it to me, I was suprised because it was the one I was looking for! If you know Fred, tell him thanks for selling me that Black Johnson Guitar. My son has it now and he will be practicing on it as part of his recovery from menengitis.

I have that guitar too. Pretty nice instrument for the money. I bought it to keep at my shop. It's nice to have when I'm waiting for paint to dry. Sometimes I get a little carried away and forget to get back to work though.

Nice story, thanks for sharing with us. Hope the best for your son.

.

What? You mean high "E" is the TOP string. No way dude! That changes everything!
