I was inspired by O'Brian Eselu to try his signature song, "Pua Ahihi". Eselu's version is a benchmark for how this song should be sung.

Wow, that is beautiful! Have you heard Dennis Kamakahi's version of Queen's Jubilee on his album "`Ohana"? That one is my favorite. |
E mālama pono a e hoʻomaha ma ka maluhia o ke Akua,

Dennis does two versions of the mele on the `Ohana CD. One is the Queen's Jubilee, instrumental version, and one is "Ladana", sung so very beautifully. I have search and searched for lyrics to Ladana. Dennis once e-mailed me that he found the lyrics at Bishop Museum. When I hear that, once again I am reminded of the amazing talent that came from the royal family. It just oozed out of them. Wow! |

Makalapua wrote two sets of lyrics to the same melody and chord structure. In the liner notes to the CD, Dennis intimates that the writing style of each may indicate that "Ladana" was written before "Jubilee." But "The Queen's Songbook" indicates that "Jubilee" was written on June 20 while in London and that "Ladana" was written on July 4 on the ship back from London.
Conspiculously, the lyric to "Ladana" doesn't appear in the songbook. But I will be in the Bishop Museum archives next month and I will try to rustle this one up (along with any number of others that have been weighing on my mind).
(Incidentally, I love the version of "Jubilee" on Weldon Kekauoha's "Kanaka Maoli" CD which features Bobby Moderow in what I think is his most poignant slack key work ever.)
