I do not know what took me so long to buy volumes I and II, but I am glad I did. These two CDs give me a taste of some music that I have not heard before such as Emma Veary, Ho`okena, Don Tiki, George Helm, and Alfred Apaka. They are great for historical purposes, but probably would be even better if I purchased the book, as well. The Honolulu Magazine web site has blurbs about each of the albums, so you can read a bit of mo`olelo to learn why the "judges" selected the recordings that they did. www.honolulumagazine.com. I searched for 50 greatest, and went from there. Also on the web site are the 50 greatest SONGS, plus mini-biographies on the panel of experts used to select the favorites.

My one big question aboout these recordings is regarding volume II, last cut. It is Hawai`i Aloha by Don Ho. And in my opinion (yes, I know it does not count for much), it stinks. It is horrible. It is not very musical. It does not put reverence where reverence should be and seems not to have the beautiful melody and feeling that I get whenever I hear the song. Frankly, it sounds like the slurred words of one who is inebriated. I just do not understand why this was chosen as a prime example of Hawaiian music that has had a great impact or did something innovative.

Can anyone help explain this to me? I don't get it.

PS: Auntie Genoa amazes me on `Alika. I would have been keeled over gasping for breath. She musta been very young when that one was recorded. WOW!!!!

Me ke aloha
Malama pono,
Wanda

Auntie Genoa was nearly 50 when she recorded that version of "`Alika." Ironically, I have heard her hold the high note much longer in person than she did on the record.

As for "Hawai'i Aloha," it's a song that everybody in Hawai'i Nei knows, and this particular version was recorded by an artist that everybody in Hawai'i Nei knows.

As for "'Alika," she can still hold that note at her age, which I think is even more amazing. Have you heard her do it on the "Waimea Music Festival" CD? She holds it even longer than she does on the studio version. Check it out!
