I am catching up on many years of missed episodes of Hawaii Five-O. I love and appreciate this show much more now than when I was a kid. I love seeing the places I've never been because they were torn down before I ever got there and seeing how the places I have been looked 40 years ago.

I also like the occasional cameo by a Hawaiian entertainer. The episode I watched last night (from early in Season One) featured Carole Kai and Lucky Luck. And in a weird twist, Sal Mineo performed Kui Lee's "Ain't No Big Thing." I can't wait to see what else is in store for me on these DVDs.

Anyone have a favorite 5-0 memory?

I remember a few episodes where Uncle Moe Keale was a regular playing a bartender.

I have all of season one (I guess season three has recently been released). I love seeing the landmarks and places where we have been. Sal Mineo was one hep cat in that episode. I also love seeing McGarrett walking on the beach in a suit, tie and dress up shoes, even when he is trying to be casual. I liked the asides that Zulu or Kam Fong would make about the haole giving them all the rotten jobs to do. Emma Veary appeared in about half a dozen shows over the years. Lippy Espinda was in about a half a dozen shows, too. Isn't that who George Kahumoku washed cars for? Krash Kaealoha appeared a couple of times. One of the best expisodes was in season one when the special effects guys really outdid themselves. It was when the bad guys were going to put McGarrett in this weird water sensory deprivation thing to make him go out of his mind. Cool special effects without computers and stuff. The bulk of the music on the shows I have seen on at least season one were haole rock stuff or jazz. Yvonne Elliman was in a couple of episodes. Boy, I remember her from Jesus Christ Superstar singing "I don't know How to Love Him". What a set of pipes on her! 1978-79 Melveen Leed was on two episodes.

It amazes me how prim and proper the shows were compared to stuff now a days.

That show is perfect. McGarrett is the ultimate in supercool and we know - before the show even begins - that the bad guys will get caught. Plus, as a time capsule, it perfectly captures the lingo of the time. Groovy.

The sensory deprivation chamber was in the pilot. I understand that some dialogue was inexplicably left out of that one. Hmmm...

I lived in Japan for a year right after college. I had the opportunity to attend a gathering called "International Youth Village," which was held in Japan, and which gathered people from ages 17-28 from countries from all over the world. A guy from Israel was in my group, and when I told him I was from Hawai`i, he immediately said "Book 'em, Danno!" I don't know if they bothered to dub the old episodes into Hebrew or if watched them in English. Talk about international exposure!
