You guys will remember how pleased I was to see in the last issue of Hawai`i Magazine that they had started to use the proper diacriticals for words in the Hawaiian language. Every day when something werid happens, I tell Paul that nothing will ever amaze me again, but once again here is something new that has amazed me. I am still shaking my head about this one. It is a letter to the editor in the March/April 2008 edition of the magazine.

The letter said the following: "I think by chopping up your words with the ` degrades your magazine. I see it on almost every page. I have one more year before my subscription expires, and I'm sure for this reason I will not renew. With all your correctness, I think it is absurd. Signed E. Ripka, Coopersville, MI"

I shall write a letter to the editor as well Dear E. Ripka I can think of another absurdity Try guess Sincerely Wanda J Certo PS see I did not put a period after my middle initial nor any other kind of punctuation so not to hurt your sensibilities

Me ke aloha
Malama pono,
Wanda

I am surprised, too. But I am even more surprised at the magazine for printing that ridiculous letter and exposing this reader's ignorance. This is a case where a little education would have been kinder and more fitting than public humiliation.

[somewhere i have never travelled]

somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near

your slightest look easily will unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skilfully,mysteriously) her first rose

or if your wish be to close me,i and
my life will shut very beautifully, suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;

nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility: whose texture
compels me with the color of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing

(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens; only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands

ee commings
Paul

As I've mentioned, the "new" Hawaii magazine is a joke. There are many better reasons for not renewing the subscription. Save your money and pick up free stuff at the luggage kiosks in the airports.

I like it! I found out a ton of info about Keali'i Reichel that I probably wouldn't have come across on any other websites.

Wow. Too bad people have to open their mouth before they know what they're talking about.

Not you, Paul. I think he means R. Ripka of Coopersville, MI.

Sorry Paul if you thought that I was talking about you. I was talking about the person who wrote the letter!

Funny because it is true. Difficult to understand how the use of the ʻokina "degrades" a publication.

My goodness, there is a Hawaiian word on nearly every page! I am shocked and disgusted.

Well, the statement that you just can't please everyone remains true.

Andy
