Very, very nice, Basil. The neck of that guitar looks mighty wide. How you can make barre chords? |

The classical guitar is designed with the idea in mind that the strings will be fingerpicked - not strummed - so the string spacing is a little farther apart. In classical/Spanish guitar style, the guitar is almost like an orchestra unto itself - with contrepuntal lines which require that strings be spaced far enough that one string can ring open while others are being fretted in different directions.
A lot of modern players can achieve the same effect on acoustic and electric guitars with skinnier necks. It requires even more skill, I suppose. But, as you pointed out, it ain't easy to make a barre chord on a classical guitar.
Oh, and did I fail to mention that was freakin' beautiful, Baz?

Actually, as far as string spacing goes, I was told, by an accomplished luthier, that the standard 2" "classical" nut width allows the same spacing *between* strings as a 1 3/4" nut steel string guitar - due to the extra diameter of the nylon strings. So the feel should be similar in that vein.

Oh, that makes a lot of sense! Thank you for clarifying that!
The neck still makes the classical guitar less comfortable to play. I opted for a Breedlove because the neck felt as much like my other acoustics as possible. Even closer (but not quite as rich in tone) are the inexpensive Yamaha classicals. The feel of the neck is almost as comfortable as a Stratocaster.
