I agree- way cool. I wish there were more explanation of what we are seeing- looks like several new mountains south and east of Kilauea? |

I have a molded 3-D map of Maui and the area around it (including Kaho`olawe and Moloka`i and Lana`i)showing underwater topo as well as land above sea level. It was made by the Defense Mapping Agency. The area is known to geologists as "Maui Nui", as it is all connected - the channels between the 3 islands vary at their deepest from only 50 to 100 Ft. At 15 to 25 miles out it reaches 1000 ft. and slopes down from there to *very* deep.

I had a good friend working on the NOAA boat mapping the terrain off of Hamakua/Kohala in the early 1980's. He said the valleys underwater were even more dramatic than the ones above water, but not even the crew was allowed to see the map they were making- I guess they hide submarines there. The maps show it as flat, but when we fish along the coast we see differently with a depthfinder- it will be 40 feeet, 35 feet 40 feet- then over 350 feet, off the scale, for a while- then 50 feet, 45 feet, 40 feet. Kayaking when the water is really clear you can see the edge of these dropoffs, from seeing bottom to deep blue. Great fishing on these edges!
