The Southern California Slack Key Society (SCSKS) dedicated their open mic night to the memory of Uncle Ray. We played all the Ray Kane related songs we knew.
The audience actually listened to us!!
The night also marked the (temporary?) return of the elusive Rik.
And, yes, Mike is wearing his palaka shirt.

Second week in a row I was sick and couldn't attend (as an audience member). Very classy move, guys. Sorry I missed it.

Hey, David! I just noticed you were on-board. Welcome! We missed you. Bill has been sick, too.

I am amazed that we each knew enough of Uncle Ray's songs or at least his arrangements of traditional songs to fill two and a half hours of mostly Ray Kane music. I was most impressed - especially with Dusty and Rik!
I had one restaurant patron come up to me at the end of the evening to thank us, explained his budding interest in playing slack key and the therapeutic effect Uncle Ray's music had on him while dealing with cancer. He may join us here on taropatch and join the SCSKS in spreading the Slack Key Aloha through San Diego and SoCal. |
