State aquatic biologist told me he counted more opihi on one rock on our property than he had seen on the entire island of O'ahu. I know we get choke, but I figured O'ahu had to have at least some opihi. Now I know where they are hiding!
One time some O'ahu boys came over in a helicopter to steal our opihi to sell on O'ahu. Got so greedy they overloaded the helicoper and it crashed and burned on the mountain. Even so, we found a few taro sacks they had filled and left behind, full of rotting opihi. Some people care only for themselves, no thought for others or the 'Aina. Opihi spawn into the ocean and the larvae settle where ever they float to. We see this as an area that restocks the islands.
Another thing- leave those big old mossy backs! These big opihi produce the bulk of the spawn, and they are tough anyway. Year old opihi about the size of a quarter taste the best, and are the best ones to take from an environmental standpoint of preserving the resource. If people took the small ones and left the big, old breeding stock, there would always be plenty. This is true of a lot more species than just opihi.
Since our title includes the fishing rights, we try to enforce rules that will protect the stock while providing plenty for home use. Hopefully saving some breeding stock will spill over into nearby, overfished areas. No sale is one of the rules. It is difficult to enforce as we get no support from the State, which wants to claim all the fishing rights for themselves, but we try- and the remoteness helps.
Chris

Eh wow laulau, you guys talking about my neighborhood. We used to crank the sailor boys on Hotel street. I lived around the corner on Maunakea across from Roosevelt theater. My favorite dinner which was all I could afford was large saimin at TinTin Chop Suey. I used to run around Mayor Wrights around 1958 or so. I went high school with Neff's step son one local haole boy. Mynah Li'i's son was on the JV football team with me at Roosevelt. So I used to hang out in Papakolea too. Any way the music is cool. Just keep on keeping on. |
