Wanda;just finished watching slackkey 808 punahoa. That dobro he's playing is very similiar to the one duke and I gave to Ozzie as a gift. Was a little worried at first, when he said he could'nt accept the guitar.Duke and I looked at eachother not knowing what to say or do,when I asked him why not?He said not even his mother gave some-thing like that.We were able to convince him that we really wanted him to have the guitar.Well Ozzie took the guitar out and played, you could see in his face,he liked the sound coming out of that guitar. He played nahe nahe style, more sustained instead of quick picking.Man that was a treat, our kumu showing us how good that guitar could sound.I think it was a 1932 F model. Was at his house last sunday for some kanekapila, when he mentioned he planned to record with his new toy.Can imagine duke and I,saying inside YEAH!Anyway we'll keep the LO'I posted.Aloha braddah jay. |

Wanda, you're certainly having a good YT week. Harry teaches at Coconut Grove Music in Kailua, O`ahu, and he's one excellent teacher and sweet guy. I take it you have his terrific CD?? And how about that gorgeous Scheurenbrand guitar (http://www.koaguitars.com). Harry told me that he focuses on teaching rather than performing so he can spend more time with his kids.
I don't know if it's still available, but Mary Robbin's "Isle of Golden Dreams" has been released on CD and it's a honey.
That Uncle Ray clip is off the hook!!!
The exact naming of different resonator instruments can get tricky - a Dobro most often has a "spider" bridge on an inverted cone - but not always. The single cone/cap bridge style is usually associated with the National brand which is also associated with the tricone style made famous by Sol Ho`opi`i. Dobro style guitars are usually wood bodied, National styles are usually metal bodied, but both cross over to the other. It's a fascinating history, because the Dopyera Brothers started National, then had a bust up and Rudy started DoBro then Dobro and National merged and on and on and on. Now that you're retired you can devote a couple of weeks to the story <grin>. Today Gibson owns Dobro, the National name is used by some guys building great guitars down in San Luis Obispo, and many many different companies make resonator instruments in the three main styles - tricone, single cone, and inverted cone.
