I can't wait until the Kamaka Fernandez CD comes out. Is there a realese date anyone? And Jesse, as I said before, I agree with Wanda about entering the AFFC. |

The recording of "Pua Lilia" is a young Joe Keawe, who recorded this on 49th State Records and was a protege of Johnny Almeida. It was his signature song. When his mother died in 1956, no one thought he would make it home from the mainland for the funeral. But as the doors opened to bring the casket in, Uncle Joe led the procession and his voice filled the church with this song. Plenty waimaka, according to my mom, who remembers it vividly. He spent the second half of his life on the mainland as a longshoreman and entertainer. He died in 1992. His 1977 "comeback" album, including that song updated, is highly recommended. Jesse Tinsley

Don't forget restauranteur! Joe and his wife owned more than one Polynesian-themed eaterie on the west coast.
And second the recommendation on the 1977 "Hawai`i's Falsetto Returns." It is a keeper.
