Aloha!

Does anyone have a suggestion for loosening up old and sticky Scruggs-Keith tuners?

Goo Gone Sticker Lifter. This stuff works wonders for removing anything sticky. I recently used it on varnished wood doors to remove cellophane tape. Worked like a charm. Not only gets the sticky stuff off, but also cleaned the wood and the door looks great. It even comes with a magic tool for helping to scrape paper stickers, price tags, etc. I got mine at our local craft store. I think you can find it on the internet, too. I do not think it would damage the finish of your guitar wood.

Beacon advertises in Banjo Newsletter that they service Keith tuners.
Price for cleaning & lubricating is $15.00 plus US return postage per pair of tuners. This is from Jan 2007 magazine, 'cause that's what I had handy just now. Not sure if prices have changed.
I'm not positive, but I think Beacon is Bill Keith's own store.

I don't recommend trying to open them yourself, as they have a lifetime warranty unless misused or opened. And at $137.00 a pair, it might be better not to go there.

Aloha e Paul -

I just got my tuners back from Bill Keith in refurbished shape. $15 plus shipping!! Hard to believe. And a note from Bill describing what he had done to them (a lot). So thanks so much for telling me about this. It was just exactly what I needed. It makes me glad I turned to the Taropatch ohana for advice.

Many mahalos,

Mark

With all the stuff I forget, it's a wonder I remembered seeing that add in Banjo Newsletter. Glad to help.
