Hey I've been running into this lately. A concert size with a Tenor size neck(at least that's my understanding). Does anyone have/have they used one of these? Pluses and minuses? Is it just a feakalele? I may get rid of my concert and get one if they are good. Mahalo.

The advantage of the tenor neck on a concert body is more space for fingers which is a plus for those with big hands, and secondly because of the length there is a bit more sustain from using a longer string. Because my hands are not large, I donʻt benefit from the larger spacing. (I do with the difference in spacing between a soprano neck and a concert neck.) And I do hear the difference in sustain between the concert neck and tenor neck. I have one of my superconcert tuned with low G. My concerts are all tuned with high G. So if I want a low G I pick my superconcert. The other difference is price. You usually pay more for a superconcert (but less than a tenor ukulele.) So hereʻs my two cents summary.
Superconcert: pluses 1. more space between frets 2. more sustain
minuses 1. cost more than regular concert
Tenor: pluses 1. more "bottom" than superconcert and overall fuller sound
minuses 1. cost more than superconcert 2. larger body more to carry
I really donʻt have a preference as I play all the types ukulele that I own (soprano, concert, superconcert, 6 string tenor). My preference for my concerts and soprano ukulele is the neck joining the body beyond the 12th fret. I believe the majority of soprano ukulele have the neck join at the 12th fret. Concert ukulele depends on the maker and can be the 12,13 or 14 fret - non tenor necks. And now that I thought about it, I use concert strings with my superconcert.

Hey thanks for the rundown. So you think it is here to stay I take it. I have large hands and struggle with my concert. I kind of practice on it to make the tenor seem easy. |

Doesn't seem to be much experience here with the super concert? Somehow I thought more folks would have them. |

Hapuna, You can get one from Paul Okami at KoAloha Ukulele. I picked up a real nice one for a friend last summer. They strung it left handed for her. She loves it. I no can play -- but it sounds real good!
For her, the kicker was the smaller sized body (fits the female anatomy better, if ya know what I mean) but the longer scale length of the neck gives a nicer tone that a standard concert. Also less volume than most tenors so some people really like that. Me, I'll stick with the tenor body and tenor neck. |

Sonny D ukes are really excellent instruments. Most of them are the steel string variety. Makes for a different kind of instrument. They were popular with a lot musicians a while back. Used to have some real good jams at Sonny D's place too. The ones I have seen on Ebay are nylon string types. I guess the steel string ones are a rarity today. I have no idea how they have held up. I saw them in the 90's. |

I think it was around $600. Music Guy Mike on eBay might have some. They are popular at KoAloha and many times, Paul and Alan are out of stock. I think MGMike is an authorized retailer/seller for KoAloha.
