Lawrence you were close, from Maluhia looking out is Paukukalo where Kukona St. is. The younger generation call it church'z or river mouth, old timers call it Maluhia. September look's like a better time to get togethr, I'll check with everyone and make a post on the exact day and time we'll meet, Keith what's the date your coming for the canoe race?
Me Ke Aloha Kevin...Maluhia is just like Waihee, the "Mana" feels great! |

I ran into Kili Mawae on Thursday. (I know, I know his name is Keli`i...but everyone from Ho`olehua Homestead calls him Kili...) I hadn't seen him in, ohhhh.....30 or so years. He kind of chuckled and said, "Eh lucky we nevah drown you, eh?" Kind of reminded me about one story...
I was about 8 years old we were at Mo`omomi homestead beach. Kili and some of his friends were walking down to the ocean and left the "little ones" behind. But, I wanted to hang with the Big-Boys, and I insisted I could go with them. Kili yelled out to my Pops, and said, "Uncle, da boy...we bring 'em back." Pops said OK, (probably due to the Primo beer him and Kili's father was drinking...BTW Kili's father was Uncle Mongoose...) so now I officially was da Bag-Boy. I could go with them; Kili, his brother Joe, Parker English, Johnny Pineapple Keohuloa and one or two others (they were all young adults who paddled with my Pops) and I was appointed Bag-Boy.
We waded into the water, and immediately the group went out past the reef on the left and headed out for the point on the right. In about 15 minutes we were (what seemed to me to be) waaaaay outside. Here I was, one big-eyed-half-white 8 year old hanging on to two coconut floats and one burlap bag, which was leaking fish guts and blood in some freakin' dark blue water! I was soooooo scared, but I refused to give up. Nobody had snorkels in those days, so you had to keep your head out of the water to breathe. The goggles was these 2 angle-cut bamboo things with glass (one for each eye...hehe)and strips of tire tube to keep 'em on your head so that your eyes bulge out like little bugs. That means you cannot see under the water all the time. You had to make a choice...look under the water OR breathe...All I was thinking was if I would die quick or slow from the mano that I couldn't see 'cause I needed to breathe!
Anyway, I mentioned to Kili the possibility of kanikapila down at Maluhia and said to call him...I told him I would pick him up if he needed a ride. |

It turns out that Kevin's Ohana now plays at Unisan,(808-244-4500) in Wailuku on the first Saturday of the month now. Kevin and Pekelo were there along with the steel player and bass. Usually they'll have seven in the band. The local hula halau was there in force so there were plenty of Hula dancers. They played for three hours straight, then I was tired. Good Grinds, great fun. Boy, they sure can mele. |

The steel player is usually Judge Gerry Valdriz, and the bass player is usually Sheldon, and Ikaika is usually there, too. What was the actual line-up this time?

I didn't catch their names The steel player used a frying pan, was kinda tall and a long sad michievious face. The bass player was thin, and sang falsetto. I was jetlagged and had just been manhandled at the Kaiser clinic so I just sat down and listened. They were still going when I left. |

Well, Gerry has a fry pan, but I don't know about the sad and mischievous part, and if the bass player was thin, it wasn't Sheldon :-). Musta been Joe.
Thanks,

When I was on Maui a couple of weeks ago I played a gig with Kevin & Sheldon and a bass player named Kevin who was a great singer. Didn't catch his last name. We played a political rally for Sol Ho`ohalahala. The other musical group was Richard Ho`opii. It was so much fun!
Afterwards Kevin & I went to Unisan for fried ice cream & diet coke. My arteries may never recover...

Diet Coke will get you every time.
BTW, how was the traffic situation? Getting still worse? Or has recession (or anything else) brought it down to tolerable levels?

Aloha, TP/ Ohana. It's been awhile since I had a chance to come online. It's great to see everyone's doing well. "Ola Hou" (new beginning.) We've been at Unisan for a year now, we only get together every first saturday of the month. everyone has there own gig's and we come together once a month to play the kine of music we love. (hawaiian folk music.)
Sheldon and Ikaika couldn't make last months gig, so gerri, pekelo, and kevin kanimoto on bass played that night. It didn't seem like we played 3 straight hour's.(haa! haa!) well we did end at 10:00.
December 6 Everyone from Ola Hou will be there, Unisan is located at 2102 west vineyard st. wailuku. The owners called and said Saturday December 6 theres a halau with at least a hundred of them will be there and about 50 teachers from Baldwin high school will be there that night too.
Unisan holds up to 225, we start at 6pm till 9pm so far we always play our last song at 10:00.
Me Ke Aloha Kevin. Have a Safe Holiday Season! |

Kevin,
Sorry to have missed you a few weeks ago. I called but it seems there were some connection problems. I hope all's well with you and your family. My Aunty Emily says hi, too.
