I would humbly request opinions on the usefulness of the following gadget: http://www.cyberguys.com/templates/SearchDetail.asp?productID=12833
I learned about it in a catalog that came yesterdy, and that sounds like a swell idea to me, rather than buying an empeetree (MP3) playah. It is way more cost effective. Drawback: only can use in the car. But for me that is OK, because I think it would look way dumb for a 56 year old wrinkled dame to be walking down the street with her earphones on.
Opinions/comments will be greatly appreciated. Catalog has it on sale for $27.99.

Hi Wanda -
Looks like a cool gadget.
However, I have had varied results using a mini FM transmitter in the car with the couple I've tried with my iPod. What I found when traveling is that I had to change the transmitter channel every time I got in range of a strong FM signal. That may not be a problem for you if you only use it around town, etc.
Personally, I'd suggest picking up an inexpensive MP3 player and adding an aux input to your car stereo.
Why? Well, for one thing you'd be able to listen to your own tunes when flying, or at the dentist -- which is what sold me.
And you'll have more control over arranging playlists, etc.

Nah. Just wiggle like they do in those iPod ads. Life's too short not to amuse total strangers.

Is it possible to add an aux input to a car stereo that doesn't already have one? Sounds like a major surgical proceedure to me. Paul |

It's doable. If you have ever installed a stereo in your car (like maybe that first 8 track) you'll have the chops to pull it off.
Or even if you haven't. It's just a matter of pushing, pulling, plugging, unplugging & prodding. (As are many pleasant things in life.)
Start with a Google search page for links to adaptors, hacks, etc.
I used these terms: aux+input+car+stereo+howto and got about 1400 matches.
For example, here's a decent overview of what's entailed from Crutchfield:

Good luck!

Back when I did new car prep in the early seventies, I did put in some radios. I could lay upside down with my hands in the dashboard in those days. Now, I'd fall asleep. I never had no 8 tracks, though. They were gone before I got out of the $50.00 beater cars I used to drive. When they died, you junked 'em.Or took the plates off and abandoned 'em where they were. If the radio doubled the value of your car, you couldn't afford to abandon it. All my good stereo stuff was in the house. Paul |
