You Tube – week of July 20, 2008
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhWNwWZk5fo – Our beloved Keoki Kahumoku at the Big Island Hawaiian Music Festival. Hot off the presses. Posted only 4 hours ago, about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Hawai`i time. Can’t ask for quicker than that! And even though this one has been posted before, I love it. Keoki and George doing the choo-choo song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYU28a8j2OY&NR=1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Ag8LWAMfx0 – Makana
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVdE1Kkw8HU – This is more beautiful music from the very talented gentleman from Japan, Taro8. This week he is playing Pua Lililehua and Pupu Hinuhinu. I think he is using a flat pick, but I am not sure. What do you guys think?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpXUqL7zaZM&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CSx-kKBtxk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CSx-kKBtxk Led Kaapana playing at someone’s wedding. Wow! What a wedding bash that must have been.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7c5Ry20I3oo – Dennis Kamakahi at the Little Fox, Redwood City, CA. Aloha Ko`olau. We love you Uncle Dennis. Thank you for making such beautiful music and sharing it with the world.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulCri-Uie_Q – And here is Uncle Dennis’ brother, Jeff, away in cold Minnesota teaching college Sociology, playing nice music, too. When you listen to this recording which is very well engineered, you would swear Dennis is singing harmony with him,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvtBokVa34U – Arizona Aloha Festival – Wahine Ilikea, sung and danced.
http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=kumusensei&p=r – Is there a new guy in Washington State? Like someone in Kennewick, WA, da boonies? Here are lots of nice hula prior to the Makaha Sons concert there. I wonder if this new guy, Kumu Sensei is a Taro Patch member? If anyone knows who he is, tell him come on over and wala`au with us. It is obviously someone who cares deeply for the Hawaiian music and wishes to share it with all of those who cannot get regular doses of live music. Thank you Kumu Sensei.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7Gsxur8YMY – Kainoa performed by Backsidebarrels on `ukulele.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFpDh8a4HQI – Hawaiian Wedding Song on steel performed by Rick Alexander. Very nice. Looks like he played all the other instruments, as well.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=597_qd-ZyQ8 – Kalapana – Black Sand. Not so very nahenahe, but.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Ixat-E6bX0 – Jake Shimabukuro and the Makaha Sons – Noho Paipai. From the video Songs of Aloha.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tu7eT6FYrqo – Some youngins playing `ukulele and singing. Very nice for a start. Kyle Paala sings "Turn your lights down low" while Kalani Maglinti plays the uke at Ho'olaulea o8.

No flatpick, kiddo, you can see his thumb working. The strums are done with the back of his index nail. Did you notice that he modulated Pua Lililehua through G, C, and D then back to G? Nice.

Re: the Pua Lililehua/Pupu Hinuhinu - Played classical style, I can picture them as music for milady dressed in Rennaisance clothing, kind of Scarborough Faire/Canticle-ish. |
