This article will help give Uke popularity another little push, but it also displays typical Myopia on the part of the New York Times:

... NOT!!

Of course he has helped it along a great deal in recent years, but
the Kamaka Uke company has been overwhelmed and basically production
limited many more years than that. And other producers have been
experiencing similar increased demand for much longer than two years.

Just because the Times noticed it only about 2 years ago does not
mean that is actually when the new wave (craze?) started!
