Is it a good idea for retailers to submit advertising?
I do not think so.
Any other opinions out there?

Hey cmdr - I agree.
Andy -- you should go back to ruthie and charge her for advertising. That post is ad work plain and simple -- different from one of us giving a suggestion to someone else or the group, and supplying a link as a courtesy.
By contrast, you don't see Auntie Marie making shameless plugs. She doesn't even "sneak" them in when she could. A class act.
I say charge ruthie or wipe out her posting. Raymond San Jose |

My suggestion would be a sub category for retail links, but no specific advertisements. Diana |

I agree with Mike and Raymond on this one. Ruthie's membership as it stands now is nothing more than a use of this forum for commercial gain and lacks the name of any individual with a particular interest in slack key and related subjects. If an individual who may be connected with this company wishes to join this forum and use it for an exchange of slack key related information the way the rest of us do they of course would be welcome. Too bad R******M**** didn't leave an email address. Maybe there is one that Andy is privy to.
I think that Andy is going to have a major problem trying to separate sheep from goats when it comes to posts like this. Doesn't a post in Share-a-link lead to an entry in the Links section? Aside from the artist's links (and most of them would love to sell you their CD's) most of the other links are retail, just less overt than R******M****. So Andy has to judge how useful a person has been to the board, or how overtly commercial their site is? If he wants to take the task on, good. If he'd just as soon pass, then Diana's suggestion for a special links section for kinds of retailers is an easy way for him to handle this. I've never heard of R******M****, but I see it carries ukuleles so maybe it's not all bad. |

i couldn't find on R******M****.com *any* slack key information (even elderly has slack key books).
what are we suggesting? that andy just remove posts and accounts like this that he move such posts to a "commercial" folder? that he develops an advertisement policy and try to get some money for taropatch?
the first policy seems to be the simplest and least work for andy... but, having a folder for advertisements might be nice if there were folks who were actually interested in slack key wished to advertise.

Has anyone had any experience with this vendor? Maybe they are great, maybe not... I'd like to find out. I like having choices.

This ad is not what this group is about. No moderated Usenet Newsgroup I know of accepts blatant ads like R******M****.com. It is a single slice of spam. If the person behind it participates in an acceptable way, that *might* mitigate the posting, but it is a real bad way of introducing yourself. The problem is that it is lots more work for our Honorable Moderator. However, I predict that we will see more of this kind of thing as this group has grown in membership, participation and good press.
I don't remember if there is an explicit ad prohibition announcement at registration time, but there should be if there isn't. Also, that ad should be deleted, it is much too much work to vet every vendor for slack key content. Too bad there is no current auto-blocking. In Newsgroups, messages go to moderators first and only posted after approval - but, lots of work, as I said.
Go away or apologise, Ruthie.

Actually I think it goes further than just direct advertising.
The website looks pretty basic and not helpful so not somewhere I would buy something. Taropatch.net has a good web rating, meaning that chances are if you search for something about slack key on google, Taropatch.net will be on the first page. I think the purpose of this link is to boost the rating of their website, riding the coat-tail of taropatch.net, but giving nothing back webwise or otherwise, and possibly giving that website the ability to pulled up on a search for "slack key guitar". The above link could possibly affect taropatch.net's web ratings, making it harder to be found by the people who want to. They may have even hired someone to go out and do this for them, so if the link stays, you may see more.
Andy, I would erase the link before the end of the month when website ratings are reviewed to protect this website (and members) and I would even go so far as to remove this whole thread and remove any mention of RM.com. If you have any questions about this web stuff or would just like to know more information shoot me and email, if you really want to know how this stuff works, I could hook you up with someone who really knows this stuff.

This is a great community and I appreciate everyone who so quickly expressed their opinions. Given that this post appears to only have commercial interest and adds nothing to the interest of this community, I essentially removed the post. |

Not that big a deal. No porn, not even guitar porn. My decision to mask the person's link stems from their not contributing to any discussion here but instead just advertising their music retail site. Not to mention general `ohana opinion was against the post. Moreover, the posted advertisement was made in the "Support Taropatch.net" forum, whether intentional or not, making it appear that shopping their site benefited this one. So for now, they've been censored. If they choose to participate in discussions here, I would reconsider - of course.
The only SPAM I like is the kind you eat. SPAM musubi, SPAM omelette, SPAM fried rice, etc. Darn it, I'm hungry again. |
