Hi anybody own one? Seems to be good quality for the $ but haven't played one yet. Anything else in the price range I should know about? Weissenborn is out of my range and the goldtone seems mass produced and have heard lots of negatives. Apologies if this has been discussed before.
On a seperate but related note, Anyone switched from slack key to lap steel as an end run around elbow tendonitis? Any luck decreasing or eliminating the tendonitis?

Yo Dog -
I have played a couple of Superiors -- the good ones were quite good and the others were... well, sorta fine. This was a few years ago, quality control was something of an issue back then. Don't know if it still is.
KonaBob, who will chime in soon, plays one of the good ones. And it is very good, indeed.
RE: The Gold Tone Weissenborns -- yep, they can use the name cuz John Pearse owns it. I have not had any experience with 'em, but Gold Tone instruments tend to vary quite a bit in quality on any given production run. Good ones can be had... but it'll take lots of auditioning.
Marc Silber has some very nice ones that are worth searching out. In fact, here's one: http://www.resohangout.com/classifieds/detail.asp?cid=273
I played one of his black acacia ones last year and it was quite nice.

Hi Magdog,
I haven't played a Superior Weisse as yet, but I'd like to some day. I did have a Gold Tone Spruce/Mahogany all solid woods once, and thought it to be pretty nice for the money (I bought it used), but sold it along the way.
Recently I've been thinking of getting one of the Gold Tone solid Mahogany Weisse's though. Still not many reviews of them out there either, so I think it's more try it and see what you like, if it's in your price range. Just buy from someone who has a good return policy.
No doubt the Superiors have had better press-the only negative being the wide string spacing-don't know if it's still the same in current production-but some don't seem to mind anyway.
Good luck! |
