Lilioukalani wrote Sanoe in 4/4 time. Every version I have heard is in 3/4 time. How did that happen? It seems and sounds great as a waltz. But is that how Lilioukalani intended it to be played? Does anyone do it the way it was written? Does anyone know where to get a copy of the original manuscript in the queen's handwriting? Can anyone give an explanation why everyone plays and records it in 3/4 time? Mahalo...

The music is in the Bishop Museum. Check out their web site. You have to view it in person, wearing gloves and all the document protection protocol. Perhaps an e-mail to Dennis Kamakahi through Taro Patch could help. He has done extensive research on the Queen's mele. Another couple of sources for knowledge would be Puakea Nogelmeier (can get his e-mail through UH-Manoa) or Aaron Mahi. I do not know how to reach Aaron, but Aaron, Martin & George tour your area frequently, maybe you can talk to Aaron. He is a wonder at history of songs. |

I looked up some notes on this from a talk Aaron gave. I think I must have dozed off cause all I got scribbled was "lots of musicians learned it this way and pass it on in 3/4" Like Wanda wrote, I would try to email him |

Another person who has done very extensive research on Queen Liliuokalani's compositions is Ozzie Kotani. He has researched hundreds of her songs and was going to publish something (or did he already?). Since he is a "museum conservator" type of person, he was/is in a good position and has the mental bent for this kind of research.
There is a recording where Hui 'Ohana that performs Sanoe in 4/4, I forget which disc, maybe the '87 one.

Thanks. Ozzie and Hui Ohana do it in 3/4 time. So does Maunalua, Steve Sano, Stephan Inglis, Mark Nelson, Danny Carvalho, Anela Lauren, Jeff Peterson/Makana, Greg MacDonald, Nedward, Leokane Pryor, Ohta/Ho, Richard Rossbach, Pierre Grille and others. All these versions are wonderful(well, most of them). But I haven't found a single recorded version in 4/4 time yet.
I'm not really looking for versions in 4/4 time. I'm just wondering why nobody does it that way. If it is a matter of preference, I don't understand why people don't prefer the way the queen wrote it. Maybe she did write it in 3/4. The Queens Songbook by Dorothy Gillet and Barbara Smith has it in 4/4 time. I knew both ladies and trust their research as they both were meticulous in everything they did. Perhaps the queen was not properly trained to transcribe music and and someone early on has interpreted it with corrections to her manuscript. I can't be certain until I see the original manuscript in Lilioukalani's handwriting. I emailed Bishop Museum a while back, but no reply has come yet. I'll call them later today.

somewhere in the fog of the back of my mind, i recall hearing about other songs that have been changed in similar ways. i'll keep trying to remember the songs, but i think that it has less to do with disagreeing with the way lili`u wrote it, and rather hearing and liking the waltz version.

Two of my favorite examples are "Chorus Jig" ... which is a reel.. and a ska version of "Take Five" ... in four...
Or, as an old time fiddler I used to know once said, "Is that one of them 4/4 waltzes?"
