Aloha mai kakou, Pehea?
My 'ohana and I are really considering going back to Hawai'i again, and I wanted to know which of the two mokupuni you all would recommend I go to. I've been to Maui twice, love it, and would go back in a heartbeat, but a lot of people I've written and spoken to have told me lots of great things about the Big Island too. I'm gonna choose the one that will have more cultural opportunities in the month of February - in other words, events featuring 'olelo, hula, Hawaiian music, cultural information, etc. Any advice?

There are KonaBob's and Donald Kaulia's things happening in the Kona area.
What else I do not know, but KonaBob also has events listed at his site - No? http://www.konaweb.com/
There is probably an activity guide for Hilo-side too, like:
http://www.yelp.com/search?find_loc=Hilo%2C HI&cflt=arts
or the East Hawaii Cultural Center (sponsors of many slack key festivals):

When I go, I usually go to Oahu because of what's happening in Waikiki - Thursday and Sunday at the Marriott, Steel Guitar Sunday (second Sunday) at the Outrigger, Uncle Eddie Kamai Sunday afternoon at Honey's in Kaneohi, Ledward playing around somewhere, the Aki Bone, Hriam Olsen Trio at Duke's, etc. I know Honolulu is another big city, so I stay over on the Windward Side for kicking back. |

I wish I were a teen-aged girl whose parents would let her decide which island to visit. Man, that is some power. Ui-ha! I would not be that nice of a parent. I would eave the kids home when we go holoholo. Let kids work for the finer things in life, I say. Wait until they grow up and have eto work for a living to earn the kala to afford to hele Hawai`i. Not easy to do. Makes one appreciate the opportunity much more.
But one thing that I would say makes it win hands-down for Moku o Keawe -- the volcano. No feeliing anywhere ever like witnessing creation and feeling Pele's power/ I am sure in your situation, `Alika, is that you would feel the mana of Pele, even if you cannot witness her might and power. |

Konabob - dunno when coming back to Big Island. Only limited money and we have to go see Duke and Jay and Bla & Kathleen and Doug Fitch and Kawika and all our other Taro Patch `ohana on O`ahu. Gotta try to see Eddie Kamae. And I've never seen Led up close and personal. And gotta see Martin, George and Aaron. Gott see that CUTE Ocean Kaowili. And gotta see Barry Kimokeo. Gotta see the Slack Key Festival and maybe even can time it right for the 2nd annual Gabby Pahinui Waimanalo Kanikapila.
Maybe when the Ferry goes to Big Island it will be easier to afford. I'm a retiree on a fixed income, you know. If air fares go higher, I might have to think about a part time job to fund the Hawai`i trip.
But we will find you some day, Konabob, some day. |

I've been to both places and I really like the Big Island. So much to do. Especially around the volcano. I'd spend 3 days Hilo side and then take a day to leisurely drive over to Kona via South Point and fly in and out of Hilo and drive around the north side (shorter trip) back to Hilo.
I found music at the hotels in Kona but the group I saw all the time at the Hilo Hawaiian are long gone. Anyone remember Aunty Alberta and Alvin Kalima? I know Alvin died and Alberta had a stroke. Never cared for the Browns. Don't know if Uncle George Naope is still performing but he's a hoot. Saw him lots at the Keauhou Beach. Also saw Ho'Aikane a lot over there too. Wonder if Russell and Walter are still performing? Lim Family do a good show at the Waikoloa.
Last time I went Maui, it was starting to get built up and lots of traffic jams pau hana time, especially around Lahaina.
I haven't been back in awhile but even though there's lots of music on O'ahu, for just getting out and about taking in all the cultural things without all the cars, I'd recommend Big Island. |

Haha Wanda, yes, my makua always include me in 'ohana decisions. That's probably because I'm an only child. I'll keep talking to them and let you know if we go and where we'll go. Who knows, maybe I could get to meet a TPer or two! BTW, if we go to Maui, we were thinking about also going to Lana'i for a few days. |

There is very little live Hawaiian music in East Hawai‘i on a regular basis, mostly special events at the previously mentioned EHCC, at fundraising events for various schools. One that will be coming up on February 14th is a fundraiser for my daughter's school, Ke Kula ‘o Nāwahīokalani‘ōpu‘u in Kea‘au. It usually features a nice lineup of Hawai‘i island entertainers like Darlene Ahuna, Sudden Rush, Kainani Kahaunaele, the Keli‘iho‘omalu family from Puna, Kaumakaiwa Kanaka‘ole and Kaniela Masoe - the later two are both graduates of the school - and sometimes one big name entertainer from off-island. Two years ago it was Raiatea, Kenneth Makuakāne about two years ago, I don't know who was brought in last year as we were in Aotearoa and I wasn't involved in the planning. As soon as I hear who is performing I'll post again but I don't think we've even discussed names yet. It is a Hawaiian medium (immersion) school, so you would hear a lot of ‘ōlelo.
Our college is also planning a week of festivities in February to honor Princess Ruth Ke‘elikōlani, for whom our college is named. I don't have the exact dates and events but believe it will be during the first week of February. As our college operates completely in ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i, you'd have the opportunity to hear it used a lot, probably exclusively, during the events.
There is far more entertainment on the Kona side, as mentioned by others the Lim family, Sunday performances at the King's Shops and at the hotels. |

Thanks Auntie Maria, and I have been meaning to thank you for your excellent radio programs! Wish you guys had a sister station over here. We got 'nutten but Jawaiian on the radio stations over here. I find myself listening to AM 940 in my car... but after sunset, it dies out.
I just wanted to mention that many of the musicians here on the Big Island are happy to hear from or meet up with visiting TaroPatchers. The Big Island is big, but still pretty rural. We still enjoy meeting visitors... especially if they have a guitar or 'ukulele in their hands. Keoki, Sonny, Don Kaulia, John Keawi, and Bruddah Smitty are all very friendly people who will talk to you when you are here. Some of these guys do small kine public classes or kanikapilas which I find even more fun than "performances". And of course I enjoy meeting up with other musicians, too. If you don't want to chance your guitar with the airlines, you can always rent one for a week from my buddies at Soundwave Music in Kona. (808) 326-2297. You can also try Hilo Guitars (http://www.hiloguitars.com/) if you are flying into Hilo.
Aloha, -Konabob

Oh yes, I think I've posted here about it before. I definitely want to go but will have school during the January one, and my 'ohana would rather not go to Hawai'i in the summer when it's nice here too. But maybe I'll go when I'm in college cuz we'll most likely have longer breaks. |
