Now I know why I dream of Hawai`i when the weather gets cold and gray in Cleveland. It snowed today. Nothing stuck on the ground, but it makes me grumpy no matter. Then when the light snow was pau, it rained down hard ice balls hard enough to scare my popoki from the noise of it hitting the windows.

Sheesh. It is going to be a looong winter.

Lucky you live Hawai`i.

Hi Wanda.......I feel for you! We only get a little bit of snow here in western Washington and some years we don't get any. And when we do, it's so new to us that it's a thrill and we go out and have fun in it! But we've had a pleasant stretch of really nice weather this past week. It was clear blue skies here today with a high of 62. Not Hawaii weather by any means but pretty darn nice! We went out for an hour run before lunch and it was sooooo nice! Came across two deer and a bunch of rabbits and squirrels on the trail too. Try to have a nice winter any way!

Aloha,
John A.

Even though I live in the city, I can sit in my front window or back windows and watch the critters. We get choke deer and squirrels (`Oni`Oni LOVES the squirrel -- it is one of the English words she knows ver weel. If I say squirrely outside, she runs to the window to find him). Also sometimes other critters like one time a red fox and coyotes are starting to come around; choke ground hogs and choke raccoons and choke possums. The good thing about snow is you can look outside and see the foot prints and tell what critters have been in your yard.

I put plenty warm blankies on the bed tonight. Its going to be a long natural gas heating season. I hope my jack-o-lantern does not freeze in the cold.

You mention warm blankets.....actually another thing I like about the cooler weather is that you can snuggle up next to your sweetie under the bed covers and get warm.....among other things. In Hawaii, most nights you don't even want a blanket over you and if you try to snuggle up then you just get sticky!

John A.

i never minded the snow til I moved to a hilly area. Now, if we get snow, I can go out to the main road and watch the 4X4s go into the ditch. Snow looks good on the mountains, though. It means that we can take showers next fall!

Even Hawaii is getting an Early Snow. This was in West Hawaii Toaday on Monday.

Snow falls atop Mauna Kea

Big Island residents and visitors eagerly awaiting the season's first snowfall on Mauna Kea were rewarded Saturday.

Falling snow and ice blanketing the summit roads caused the closure of the Mauna Kea Access Road to the public at 5:32 a.m.

Snow removal operations immediately began and the road reopened almost five hours later. Still officials warned that inclement weather was forecasted for the next several days.

Visitors to the 14,000-foot volcanic mountain are advised to prepare themselves for severe weather. This is especially true now during the winter months, when heavy storms typically deposit several feet of snow.

Minimum nighttime temperatures at the summit are around 25 degrees Fahrenheit while the maximum daytime temperatures are about 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Wind chill and high altitude can make conditions feel colder.

I would move (to O`ahu) if I had plenty money, but since this dinky house is paid off, I'd rather complain about the weather and then use my limited income to go to Hawai`i as we can afford it. And I really do love spring and fall in Ohio. It gets quite beautiful.

Here are some views out my front door this morning:

Wow, look at all that powdered sugar! Think how many donuts that would make.

That's what we have to suffer through from living in the city instead of da desert boonies. Fire hydrants are good for the home-owner's insurance. Street lights are good for shining through your bedrooom window when you are having trouble sleeping. Paved roads are very, very good. Especially if the snow plows come to clean them. Also, do not forget we get bennies such as traffic noise from the freeway; factory noise and the beep-beep-beep of towmotors back up and the trains which go rumbling through town. But none of that stuff bothers me like having to drive in the snow, so I think I shall just hibernate for the winter like Punxsutawney Phil.

What I love about winter in Seattle: snow, if it comes, never sticks around. I stay home until 10am and let the locals run into each other. I am a ski nut, so I drive into the mountains, about 2800' the rain changes to snow, I ski in it, and drive back out. No salt on the roads, no shoveling walks and driveways, and no arcitc cold temperatures.

Yikes, Debbie. Don't you live Indiana? The bad weather comes through Indiana before it gets to Cleveland. And don't be a wimp -- if the de Silva `ohana and Ale`a come from Hawai`i, you can tough it out. Don't forget, once you get here, the hotel is toasty warm.

The snow on our side of the street has melted. It is still there across the street, though. And today the city came with a giant sucking truck to suck up the leaves that we have to rake out to the tree lawn. I reckon I do not have to pay the lawn guy any more money this year. Why heck, he is probably on his way somewhere warm already.

I like what Jack said about waiting until 10 a.m. That is another good thing about being retired! But Lord have mercy. I would NEVER stand up on two skinny sticks and shuss myself down the side of a mountain. I can hurt myself much easier than that. It is pretty pitiful even here in Cleveland area that the ski places have to make artificial snow. It is like one giant shave ice machine, I think.
