"Test Pressings Test pressing LPs are the very first to come off the stampers and are thus closer to the sound of the master tape. LPs of this type are not usually offered for sale to consumers but are used by record companies for evaluation purposes. It is only after the test pressings are approved that the actual LPs can be pressed. Test Pressings are typically packaged in plain white jackets with blank record labels. Occasionally there will be hand-written catalog numbers, pressing dates or other pertinent information ont he covers and /or labels. As would be expected, quantities are extremely limited (many are one-of-a-kind) and all are sold on first come, first serve basis." Information From Accoustic Sounds Inc. Hope that helps. My Dad had a TON of old LPS that I had to deal with after he passed. Collectors forget how hard it is for others to understand their passions sometimes. |

That is an interesting bit of folklore. I suppose in some minute fashion it may be true, but the fact is a test pressing is simply that-- a test to see if the process worked properly.
I've had tests of my LPs come back with all kinds of errors-- mostly inner groove distortion, but other mess ups like skips, crackles and, oh, the wrong freaking album. (True story-- one of my first records came back as a rare live recording of the 13th Floor Elevator. Hipness points if you know who they were. Though, if you remember, you probably weren't at any of their shows....)
Because it usually only gets played a couple of times, a test pressing may sound better than a released recording. But, in general, they are supposed to sound exactly the same.
That's the point-- I would never approve a test pressing if I thought the subsequent pressings would not sound as good.
The above says nothing about the supposed collectable value of test pressings.. that''s another story.
