Excuse my ignorance please. Are their any sources (books videos tapes) that will teach a flat-picker how to play some slack key tunes? Are there any accomplished slack key guitarists that mainly use a flat pick? Matison

Matison,
Welcome to the forum. There are no such books or videos that I am aware of, mainly due to the fact that the tradition is a unique finger picked style. For a really good overview, read this.
Now, I think I've seen Barry Flanagan flatpick in taro patch tuning. He could afford not to pick all the bass notes since Keli`i Kaneali`i was backing him with a 12 string guitar. Traditionalists might argue that Barry was not playing "true" slack key.
Also, when I saw Jerry Santos perform he was playing with guitarist Mark Yim. In order to avoid repeated retuning, Mark told me that he played "slack key style" in standard tuning. That is, he played familiar slack key riffs and phrases but his guitar was tuned EADGBE. I cannot recall if he had a flat pick but I don't think so. |

hi matison,
i've heard plenty of good guitarists on maui playing with a pick, but it's not exactly slack key. it's good, though.
doesn't joanie komatsu play with a plectrum?

You can see Ray Kane use a flatpick for accompaniment on the Susan Friedman video. |
