The art of music has been diminishing in schools around our great nation. I know there are many teachers and students on this forum. I can honestly state that my interest in music, band and choir were the main reasons I went to the other classes, both in high school and college. As part of the stimulus package that was forced on us we should put a small piece of that back into the arts to keep them alive.

On a different, but related note, I just received this email from a school librarian here in Kona. If any of you are performing artists and would not mind having kids listen to your music, you can let me know, and I will put the librarian in touch with you:
As the new librarian at Konawaena Middle School, I am now in charge of the morning announcements on our school's closed circuit television system. During the course of the school year, different classes take turns providing two anchors, two camera crew, and two others who are trained to operate the broadcast equipment involved. The Broadcast starts at 8:10 and ends when the announcements are finished. We would like to be able to play five or ten minutes of music before and after the broadcast. One of the students would have the job of piping in the music from a CD.
I believe that an important component of their education should include a respect for and knowledge of copyright law. Therefore, I want to make a point of asking artists for written permission to play their works and would credit them verbally on the broadcast and also on the written version teacher's receive. Something like "This week's featured musician is _____ who has given us permission to broadcast music from his/her CD "title".) ". The Hawaii Dept. of Education has an official "permissions" form that I would furnish and ask the artist to sign. This would just be good, of course, for the purpose stated above at my school.
As we do not have any money left in our materials budget for the library, I would plan on buying personal CDs to use for this purpose
If you have any suggestions for musicians who might be agreeable to my request, I would appreciate your letting me know.
Thanks for your help! Cheryl
