This past Sunday I went to Dusty Strings in Fremont(WA) area and attended a wonderful workshop on Beginning Uke. It was taught by Gregg Porter and Rod Higuchi. By the end of the class we were all playing a song and singing. It was so much fun I purchased a uke. I learned so much from them. Their approach was non threatening and we took it slow and I think we were all thrilled with our learning curve. I think Dusty Strings sold at least 3 Ukes to Beginners. I hope to attend another of their workshops and may even attempt to go to the SUPA. I wanted to share this with folks as there just may be someone "thinking about " learning the uke but are not sure. Dusty string was nice enough to have loaner ukes for the class for those of us that did not have the instrument. Keep on plucking Judy

Nice, Judy! Just show up at SUPA and jump in. Immersion is one of the best ways to learn. I like Tonya's booklet, for starting new players on the road to musianmanship:

Hi, Judy - that's very nice of you to post, and thank you so much for joining us last weekend! Dusty Strings has asked Rod & I to come back and do our workshops on a regular basis (we also did one on Hawaiian Songs - you'll be ready for that one before long!) DS hosts some really great workshops, and another TaroPatcher (Mark Nelson) will be back to teach some at the end of March.
In addition to the regular SUPA sessions the first Sunday of each month, we now host an `ukulele "wikiwiki" session on the third Sunday, geared towards beginning players, to help get you up to speed on a number of songs. Details are at the website - www.seattleukulele.org
See you there, I hope! =Gregg= |

Yes! Another one has joined the Dark Side! Welcome, Judy...
And remember, while in many states it is illegal to use your cell phone without a hands-free while driving, not one of the 50 states has yet banned keeping an ukulele in your car for a quick tune while stopped in traffic.
aloha, keith

Driving home from DC last August, I played Wanda's uke for a good hour. Of course, She was driving at the time. Hope they don't ban it. Paul |
