Our Taro Patch braddah, Jesse Tinsley put a very swell video on You Tube of him playing and singing this song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DIfZyyva-c
I do not recall hearing this song before, so naturally, I had to start doing a bit of research about it. I have a few questions that perhaps someone could help me with.
First of all, the notes on huapala.org talk about all the different things said about the girls from the different areas are actually slurs against the girls. I do not hunderstand. I mean, what is wrong with eating crabs or what is wrong with saying A-B-C's or eating rice. OK, drinking beer, I guess I could see that if he was intimating she drank too much.
The other question pertains to the use of kaikamahine vs. keiki mahine. I love the song sung by Gary Haleamau or that SWEET Barry Kimokeo of "Keiki Mahine", and then I've heard C-A-T Popoki Makes a Cat by that SWEET Martin Pahinui, where he says kaikamahine. Means the same thing, no? Are there rules for when to use one vs. the other?
By the way, Jesse, thanks for introducing me to a new mele.

I think the "slurs" are playful generalizations which Hawaiians are famous for, and are meant in jest. Like so many other songs, the ideas behind each verse are lost on us but probably had meaning at the time. Jesse |

Keiki and keika are probably dialectical differences for the same word for young girl. Iʻll write you about the song Wanda on the private channel.
And oh that Jesse. He beating me to a lot of songs in my repertoire so I hesitate to post them since he did um awreddy. |

Geev 'um, Braddah Al! The more versions of a song there are, the more likely we can get people interested in the music and the more life the song will have. I would be interested in the story behind the song, too. |
