I've seen all sorts of hotrodding, especcially on the 6-string ukuleles. Uncle Ross Oana (Vancouver, WA) put a low G on his 6 string and had 2 unison A strings. Cool sound.
Nope never replaced an A with a G on the 4-string tenor.

Low G and unison A's....That's how my tenor-6 is tuned now.
replaced the Aguila A string with the Aguila G string and it sounds a lot better ....now got to get a low wound G ...have a regular Hilo G on it now...a little bit of tweaking.....hot rodding
