For the last few months I've been enjoying being part of a relatively new `ukulele group in the Tacoma area. Following in the footsteps of the very successful "SUPA" up north (Seattle Ukulele Players Association), we're known as "WASSUP" (Washington Association of South Sound Ukulele Players).
The group started about a year ago and consistently draws 20-25 players for monthly sessions. Three paying gigs next week will actually fully fund a late-summer picnic for the group, too.
We meet the last Tuesday of each month from 6:30 to 8:30 at Rhapsody in Bloom, 3709 6th Ave., Tacoma, WA 98406. Please come join us if you're so inclined!
The WASSUP repetoire is running about a third Hawaiian/Hapa-haole music, and there's a nice core of local style players. In fact, this sub-group hosts an additional jam session every Monday night, too.
Next up is Olympia, as another new uke group is forming further south. Their organizational meeting will be tomorrow (5/28), 7 to 9 pm, at 209 5th Ave SE, Olympia (above Darby's restaurant).
