What a deal! An all-day workshop, with food, for $30.00? I wonder if they'd come up here to Seattle? And there are still openings, that's amazing. |

Sounds fantastic. If you're nearby, I suggest you go! Chris Kamaka of Kamaka `Ukuleles but also of Ho`okena. Chris is a super nice guy and a great musician too. Bryan Tolentino plays lots of places but plays regularly with Jerry Santos at Chai's Island Bistro on O`ahu. Tell 'em, aloha from the taropatch! |

This workshop was excellent! The class was a mixed bag of beginners, intermediate and experience players but we all learned something new and had a great time regardless of the skill level.
It started out with Chris Kamaka providing a primer on ukulele history, construction, koa wood, etc. We were all free to ask questions and received a personal invitation to visit him at the factory in Honolulu for a tour when in town. (His band Ho`okena was playing in Hilo for the Merrie Monarch festival but he made time away from the bands schedule to attend the Nor Cal Uke fest.) The pace was casual as Brian provided a systematic method he recently adopted for easily transposing keys and using various chord formations up the entire fretboard.
In between learning, we were treated to performances by the Side order band as Brian demonstrated the ukulele as a lead and background instrument.
For the cost of $30, many of us felt we made away like bandits for a all day seminar with such talented instructors. In addition the gracious hosts of the workshop included plate lunches of kalua pig, and portuguese sausage, rice and mac salad with all the Hawaiian Sun you could drink! Towards the end, we were also treated to pre-uke festival performances by Hiram Bell and some of his students in attendance as well as numbers from Saichi and his students.
All in all a great time had by all!
Hopefully there will be one of these workshops scheduled next year!

Enrico,
Thanks for the report. I see that Bryan Tolentino has since registered as a member and thanks to your post I understand his username sob to mean Side Order Band. |
