Last Wednesday we hopped a United bird, flew to Frankfurt, then after a brief layover and giving the airport lounge a little taste of ki ho alu, we wound up in Roma. Our hotel is out on the edge of town, in a residential neighborhood, and we sit out in front drinking birra and cafe americano and prosecco, and I play slack key on and on.

The part that is making me laugh is that I hear someone speaking Italian while I play - when people say it's a musical language they are not kidding. The flow of the language, the stresses and rhythms of the syllables fit perfectly over the sweet voice of the guitar doing that island thing.

When a lovely 50-something Italian lady arrived and complimented the music, I explained that it was "musica Hawaiiana" and she broke into something resembling a hula.

Just back from a visit to a neighborhood pizzeria, where the special of the house featured the paper thin crust under pomodoro, salsicci, unpitted olives, sliced funghi, and a sunnyside up egg! Aiii, buono! It may not be the islands, but it's not bad.

Listen to local radio, too, Fran...Israel's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is getting _major_ airplay all over Italy (and I'm shipping copies of his "Facing Future" CD to Italy addresses, almost daily now).

Amazing...very amazing.

For vacationing with a guitar AND a laptop computer, and continuing to post to TaroPatch while doing so, Fran, you have gained admittance to the TaroPatch nerd club. Welcome!

Sorry to disappoint, and I hope I don't get kicked out of the club, but I'm not carrying a computer. The hotel in Rome had free internet access for guests and it was rarely in use, so I was able to stay hooked. Now we're in beautiful romantic Sorrento where we found internet pay-as-you-go in a "British Pub" downtown. Sorrento is a charming place but odd in a few ways. Most of the hotels have English names, and are named with serious hyperbole - ours is the Grand Park Hotel and it's a pretty standard place with five stories, maybe 150 rooms, and a seriously mediocre buffet. Not to offend anyone's heritage, but the biggest downside is three busloads of German tourists, all of whom were at the poolside party under our window until about midnight last night, popping Ps in the loud PA system then dancing the night away to dreadful schlock synth versions of songs that I didn't like that much in their original versions.

I needed a Marshall stack for my Larrivee Parlor - I would have put the fear of slack key into them!!

Still, I wouldn't have missed Sorrento, or the gorgeous drive down the autostrada, for anything. Biggest thrill of the day, being passed by a Maserati doing at least 140 mph. I stayed in the slow lane the whole way, fer sure.

Ciao,
Fran(co)

That's OK Fran, you can stay in the club on a technicality. Besides, it's just you and me anyway.
