This week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis our guest is multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winner Kawika Kahiapo, with special guest (and also a multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winner!) Del Beazley.
Celebrating 32 years in the Hawaiian music industry in 2011 (as well as 32 years of marriage!), Kawika has participated in over 70 album projects as a studio musician, with a band, or as the principal musician/solo artist. He is a 5-time Grammy nominee and performed on the Grammy-winning album “Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Volume II.” He also collaborated with friend Jack Johnson on the “Curious George” soundtrack, and occasionally performs in concert with him.
A student of Gabby "Pops" Pahinui, Kawika is currently a member of the award-winning band Kaukahi. He previously performed with Palani Vaughan and the King’s own, Na Leo Pilimehana (as a guitarist), the Native Hawaiian Band, Jesse Rivera, 3D (with Del Beazley and Dwight Kanae), and more.
Among his Nā Hōkū awards, Kawika was honored in 2007 with the Kī Hō’alu (Slack Key) Artist of the Year award. He also composed the 2007 Song of the Year "Life In these Islands.” He was co-producer of the Island documentary, “Life in These Islands.”
In addition to his many musical pursuits, Kawika is also an ordained minister, and serves on the boards of a number of organizations, including the Kōkua Hawaiʻi Foundation, PBS Hawaiʻi, and North Shore Community Land Trust, among others.
Joining Kawika will be Del Beazley, a six-time Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-winning singer, songwriter, composer and arranger. Coming from a musical family - both parents and all of his siblings have musical talents – Del learned to play the ‘ukulele at a very young age from his grandparents. Taught by Par Cockett, a teacher at Waianae High School, he learned to play guitar and slack key at age 14.
Growing up in Makaha, Del was always surrounded by Hawaiian music, and drew influence from artists like The Sunday Mānoa, Gabe Kila, Reggie Berdon, and the Makaha Sons of Ni’ihau. He has played with the likes of Israel Kamakawiwo‘ole, the Makaha Sons of Ni‘ihau, Teresa Bright, Sean Na’auao, the Side Order Band (with Bryan Tolentino, Chris Kamaka and Asa Young) and the group 3D (with Kawika Kahiapo and Dwight Kanae). He has toured in and around Hawai‘i, the mainland West Coast, and Japan, and he is also credited with having written the IZ classic, “Hawaiian Supa Man,” as well as the songs “Johnny Mahoe,” “Men Who Ride Mountains,” “Punani Patrol,” “Aloha No More,” and “Uncle Moe” in honor of the late Moe Keale.
