I just got to thinking about the equipment I carry when I play and decided to go conservative this weekend.

My set up for last Sunday:
The mic is hard to see but is on top the amp. I plugged it into the mic input on the back of the amp, and my guitar was in the regular jack on top.

As it turns out, this is all it takes to do a natural sounding solo guitar performance in public.

I used it at an elderly care facility atrium for about 30 residents and visitors. It is the most conservative set up I have used to date but it worked very well. I plugged in this time and did not mic the guitar. I played two Ki Ho'alu pieces...Ku'u Kika Kahiko and Kamalani O'Keaukaha.

The amp is a Vox DA-5--used battery powered btw, the mic is a cheap Audio Technica (for speaking), the guitar is an Alvarez w/good onboard eq--I forget the model, and finally the device that makes everything sound good...the L.R. Baggs PADI.

I got positive comments and questions about the equipment from the pastor (a very good musician).

Not much involved here. Funny though, the Baggs unit cost more than my amp and mic together, but if you have one you can make almost anything sound good.

Yes, I am a big fan of the Baggs PADI!

In this "Tiki Hut" I have two DA5's held to the popup frame using bungie cords wrapped around the DA5 straps and the frame. If you look closely enough, you'll see the microphone and instrument cables hanging down from the DA5's. Also, to the right and the left of the table, you'll see the boom microphone standsThe DA5 is a very versatile and mighty amp, given it's small footprint and wattage. "Efficiency" is the key word here:

I've even travelled overseas carrying a DA5, microphone and LR Baggs Paracoustic DI:

I recently aquired a Vox Mini3. It is more compact and allows effects on both the instrument and vocal channels. I'll eventually replace my DA5's with Mini3's. Roland Microcube, Vox Mini3, Vox DA5 and Vox DA20 to show the size difference (front and back):

Here's a link to an ongoing review of battery powered amplification:

It was at Earth Day at the old Mission in Oceanside, Skipper. Michelle dressed up my popup shelter like a Tiki Hut. It was three or four years ago. Ric
