I just saw Shawn Ishimoto's concert at The Cue in Concord this evening. What an awesome and unique musician! I was mesmerized by his guitar playing and his relaxing yet expressive vocals. He played an eclectic mix: Hawaiian, Hapa Haole, James Taylor, Gilbert O'Sullivan (remember him?), a beautiful but not well known Randy Lorenzo song, Reggae--even a Bluegrass number. His wife Jeni danced beautiful hula on several of the songs, including a very memorable one using the ipu.

After intermission, concert host Patrick Landeza joined Shawn on several impromptu songs, including a "Nani Ka'ala/Pauoa Liko Ka Lehua" medley. Loved Patrick's slack key mixed in with Shawn's harmonies and cool "how da heck did he do that" pa'anis.

Shawn recently relocated from Oahu to Southern California, and this was his first solo performance in the Bay Area. Anyhow, Shawn has two more concerts in the Bay Area this weekend. Check him out--you won't be disappointed.
