This week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis we’re featuring singer, songwriter and producer David Kahiliaulani Kuhia Kaʻio.
A native of Oʻahu, David has always been surrounded by a close-knit family with an abundance of musical talent and deep Hawaiian roots. As a young child, he can recall his aunts, uncles and cousins playing music, singing and dancing the hula at all the family gatherings – and he would watch, listen and follow their musical techniques.
David’s musical beginning was as part of a quartet called the “Sons of Liliha,” reminiscent of the rich melodious traditions of Eddie Kamae & the Sons of Hawaiʻi. Following high school, he performed in a Polynesian show in Japan for five years. Upon his return to Hawai`i in 1986, he joined the Moe Keale Band, and in 1991he formed a trio called the “Anuhea Band,” with Kalani Kupau and Alan Distajo. In 1993 they recorded the CD “Kahiau Ke Aloha” and were nominated for Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards in the Haku Mele and Most Promising Artist categories.
David was also fascinated with the unique style of Kumu Hula, chanter, composer and singer Keawe Lopes. He knew that Keawe’s voice should be shared with people around the world, so in 2002 he helped produce Keawe’s debut CD, “He Aloha No.” In 2010, working with renowned producer Kenneth Makuakane and mixing & mastering specialist Shawn Livingston Moseley, David released his solo CD entitled “Aloha Na ʻOhana,” a compilation of distinctive Hawaiian grass roots music.
Through music, David has had the pleasure of performing with many hula hālau (schools) at the Queen Liliʻuokalani Keiki Hula and King Kamehameha Hula Competitions, as well as the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival. For many years, he has worked with Halau Mōhala ʻIlima, Kumu Hula Māpuana de Silva and Kīhei de Silva in contributing his voice and music, giving ʻukulele lessons to the keiki (children), and providing support on the halau’s trips. He also volunteers and shares his ʻukulele skills with the haumana (students) at Ka Waihona o ka Naʻauao Charter School.
