For Hawaiians, life is a celebration of family and tradition. As Hawaiian musicians, we wear the traditions close to our heart. Growing up in Hawai‘i, if we weren’t on his knee of a Hawaiian music master, we were in the backyard watching or playing music with them. We would love to have you join us on Sunday, November 13, when the 3rd Annual Seattle Slack Key Festival comes to Town Hall.

Starting at 2:00 pm, this 4-hour concert features Hawaiian slack key guitar masters Cyril Pahinui, Sonny Lim, Jeff Peterson, Makana, Kawika Kahiapo and Mike Ka`awa plus ukulele prodigy Kunia Galdeira and steel guitar virtuoso Greg Sardinha. Also on the program is Mark Yamanaka, a young guitarist and falsetto singer from Hilo whose debut CD, "Lei Pua Kenikeni," was named Hawaii's 2011 Na Hoku Hanohano album of the year. Mark also took home awards for best male vocalist, song of the year and most promising new artist. Dancers from a local hula halau will also participate.

Doors open at 1:00 pm. General admission tickets at $35 and $50 are available at

In addition, on Saturday evening, November 12, the dinner/kanikapila at The Red Lantern, 520 So. Jackson Street, Seattle, gives attendees a chance to meet and "talk story" with the artists, collect autographs and, yes, impromptu hula is encouraged. The $125 ticket includes this event plus premium seating at Sunday's concert and a T-shirt.

Again, mahalo Cyril for putting the workshops together again this year. It was great to hear all that wonderful slack key music permeating Dusty Strings on Saturday morning. Anyone who dropped in the shop that morning was treated to some great finger picking. I'm looking forward to next year's festival already!
