Donʻt miss this tour with ®Grammy Award winner Keoki Kahumoku, Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winner Herb Ohta, Jr. and Hawaiʻi Music Award Winner Patrick Landeza! Each an accomplished musician in his own right, together theyʻre amazing (and hilarious! Keoki will talk story, Patrick will crack wise, and Herb will sit and roll his eyes at both of them - and try not to laugh...)
The Hawaiian Legacy Tour and workshops featuring Keoki Kahumoku, Herb Ohta, Jr. & Patrick Landeza, Sun Nov. 20, Santa Clara University (Mission California Rm, Benson Bldg.,301 Market Street, Santa Clara). Doors: 3:30, show 4pm. Tickets are $20 in adavance. Contact Jennifer Landeza - jen @ landezapresents.com or (510)423-3051. I also have concert tickets in hand for sale.
Workshop info:
Ukulele Strumming For All Levels 12pm-1:15pm - $35.00 Herb will explain how to strum, how to keep tempo and listen to rhythms. Focus will be on basic strumming patterns, including IZʼs “Over the Rainbow” strum. This workshop is open to all levels of players.
Hawaiian Turnarounds & Arpeggios for `Ukulele 1:30pm-2:45pm - $35 (Intermediate/Advanced) Have you ever wondered how Hawaiian musicians pick the melodies to the instrumental part at the beginning or between verses while everyone else is strumming it? These are called turnarounds. Herb will teach you four Hawaiian turnarounds in the key of “C”. He’ll also show you finger picking patterns, called arpeggios, which were taught to him by his father, Ohta-san.
Introduction to Slack Key 12pm-1:15pm - $35 For guitarists who are new to the Slack Key style, Keoki will give some background about the history, traditions and stories of this style as learned from his father, George Kahumoku Jr. Basics of hand position and tuning will be covered, and a simple song or two.
Intermediate Slack Key 1:30pm-2:45pm - $35 For more advanced guitarists and those who have some experience in the style, Keoki will teach some of the most common vamps (turnarounds) in the open "taro patch" tuning. Advanced picking techniques (arpeggios) and hints to help with timing will be covered.
