I’m helping to spread the word on an exciting Hawaiian Kine Christmas Show on Friday, December 2 in Alameda, CA (San Francisco Bay Area). This is a benefit show for Island Hawaiian Studios, which is also home of Halau Makana in Alameda.
HAWAIIAN KINE CHRISTMAS MUSIC AND HULA Friday, December 2, 2011, 6:00P-9:00P Encinal High School (Multi-Purpose Room) 210 Central Avenue, Alameda, CA 94501 Tickets: $20 (includes “Da Best” Spaghetti Dinner) For more information or to purchase tickets, please call (510) 910-3087 or e-mail IslandHawaiian @ gmail.com .
This family friendly show will feature some of the Bay Area’s finest young talent, including 17-year-old ‘ukulele and steel guitar wiz Evan Tom and his band, fantastic falsetto singer Kellen Kaleonahenahe Wertz (recently relocated here from Oregon), Halau Makana’s sweet vocalist/’ukulele player Lauren Jones, and the beautiful dancers of Halau Makana. In addition, Siva Polynesia and other special guests will perform. I and other Taropatchers have had the pleasure of jamming with Evan, Kellen, and Lauren, and if you haven’t seen them before, you’re in for a real treat.
During the past year Island Hawaiian Studios has generously hosted a free monthly kanikapila (usually the 4th Saturday of the month, but not for November or December due to the holidays—alternate dates pending) that’s open to all ages and playing levels. This kani has turned into one of the most well attended and enthusiastic kanis in the Bay Area (over 50 people came to the last one!). This benefit show is one way that we can support Kumu Lani Cid-Iulio’s wonderful work in teaching and sharing hula, ‘ukulele, and other Hawaiian cultural activities.
Hope to see you at the concert and mahalo for spreading the word!
Aloha, Doug

Just a quick reminder about tomorrow night's Hawaiian Kine Christmas show, which will benefit Island Hawaiian Studios (home of Halau Makana in Alameda). Several of us Taropatchers (SildaTril, ArtSap, and I) will be backing up the young and talented Kellen Wertz and Lauren Jones. We have some pretty cool arrangements, and these guys sound great!
Evan Tom and his band will also be playing. Although he is just 17 years old, Evan is one of the most talented and versatile musicians here in the Bay Area. I also heard that there's a prominent Bay Area Hawaiian musician (no stranger to Taropatch) who will play a few songs as a special guest. The hula and Tahitian dancers are terrific too.
The show is only $20.00 and includes "Da Best" spaghetti dinner (the organizers wanted to keep the price affordable for families). Hope to see you there!
Aloha, Doug |
