I hope Tommy forgives me for all the times I whispered in his ear who was playing which song when it appeared in the movie ("Gabby! now its Keola! Now its Makana! Oh now its Keola again!")- I stopped after awhile, because I was getting too emotional. To be sitting at a big Hollywood mainstream movie, and hear the music of my kumu's who I love so dearly: Ozzie Kotani and Keola Beamer,....well, I was beside myself.

Cyril, I thank you and your ʻohana for allowing the filmmakers to use your dadʻs beautiful music. This exposure will be considerable and I am sure many will be as captivated by Gabbyʻs slack key artistry as we all are here in the Taropatch and in Hawaiʻi!

Another trivia quiz question: Where does everyone think that valley is that the "Trust" owns? Is is even on Kauai? (It looked vaguely familiar to me)

And, of course we all know that Indiana Jones ran across a field to his plane parked on the Wailua river (not in South America) in "Raiders of the Lost Ark".

AND, Does anyone think that this mythical "Trust" is modeled on the Bishop Estate Trust?

Got the answer of where the Trust Land is (from USA Today), and also possibly who the "Family Trust" is modeled on:

WARNING: Potential (but minor) spoiler information may be included here:

quote:
Among the film's locations on Kauai, where Roberts' Kauai Movie Tours has already added The Descendants to their line-up:

-- Owned by the missionary-descended Rice family, Kipu Kai is the setting for the King trust's land holdings. A three-hour, $125 ATV tour by Kipu Ranch Adventures includes a stop at the beach (which is accessible only by boat) and valley overlook.

--Like Clooney's character King, The Descendants' author spent childhood vacations at Kauiokelani, an ancestral estate on Hanalei Bay. The estate's six-bedroom main house is now a $15,000 a week vacation rental; the nearby three-bedroom, beachfront Nalu Beach Cottage ($5,000 a week) is where King confronts a vacationing real estate agent who'd been having an affair with his wife.

-- Part-time Kauai resident Beau Bridges plays King's cousin, and is a real-life patron at Tahiti Nui, a rakish Hanalei bar that serves as a key backdrop in the film. "All the guys you see in the scene in the background are just local folks who were hanging at the bar," Bridges tells BlogTalkRadio."The Hawaiian band in the scene play there every Thursday night. Tahiti Nui is a legendary hang."

Kipu Kai Ranch is also where Bill Kaiwa lived from age 14, learning the Paniolo lifestyle. Bill just passed away yesterday. He was the hanai son of Jack Waterhouse.

Kipu Kai - words by Mary Puku'i music by Maddy K. Lam

No Kipu Kai ke aloha
Home i ka pili kahakai
Ilaila au i ike ai
I ka nui loko maika'i

Nanea i ka ho'olohe
I ka halulu mai o ke kai
Ka nalu nui e holu ana
I ka lae a o Kua-honu

Pau'ole ko'u ho'ohihi
I ka nani a o Ha'upu
Mauna ki'eki'e iluna
Hanohano ke 'ike aku

Makemake wale ka ikena
Ina manu pikake nani
E kaka'i e ha'aheo ana
I ka malu a o ke kiawe

Puana ia me ke aloha
No ka nani a o Ha'upu
Me Keaka loko maika'i
Ka haku a o Kipu-Kai

For Kipu Kai is my affection
Where there is a home by the sea
It was there that I found
Such unbounded hospitality

I enjoy listening
To the roar of the sea
As the large waves come rolling in
To Kua-honu point

Endless is my admiration
For the beauty of Ha'upu
A hill so high
Majestic to my sight

It is a delight to see
The pretty peacocks
Strutting by together
In the shade of the kiawe

Thus ends my song with affection
For the beauty of Ha'upu
And for Jack, the kind-hearted
The owner of Kipu-Kai

"The music of the Hawaiians, the most fascinating in the world, is still in my ears and
haunts me sleeping and waking."

Can get the soundtrack on Amazon.com for about 10 bucks. I love their description of the sountrack. The way they have described it on amazon.com is sure to get more people listening to Hawaiian music.

The Descendants is the first mainstream American movie scored exclusively with Hawaiian music, most of it created by acknowledged masters of the genre, both modern and classical Gabby Pahinui, Ray Kane, Keola Beamer, Lena Machado, Sonny Chillingworth, Jeff Peterson, and Rev. Dennis Kamakahi, among others. The filmmakers sought to make a movie with a distinctly Hawaiian flavor, and the music was a crucial component. As well as echoing the experience of watching the film, The Descendants soundtrack will reveal to listeners the soulful and emotional spectrum of Hawaiian music over the decades and serve as an eye-opening introduction to some of Hawaiian music s greatest and most essential artists.

The film has not made it to Kona, oddly. Too many 3D Christmas specials, and not enough theatres...

I hope this film will inspire more people to listen to Hawaiian music. Maybe even think about Aloha Music Camp!

The way it used to work, and I presume still does, is that theatres would bid how much per admission they would pay for the film, and the film would show at theatres bidding the most first.

Theatres showing films early charge high admissions and profit only from snack and drink sales, passing on the entire ticket price to the production company. This business model doesn't work in smaller markets like the Big Island. The film will show there after the larger markets have shown it.

This film is being shown mostly in smaller theaters that show independent small budjet projects.

My family and I saw it Thanksgiving weeked while visiting my son in Tacoma Wa at a "non profit theater"

The music was fantastic...have ordered 2 CD's as stocking stuffers

Just talked to a freind in Maui....not being shown there yet either

Oh boy oh boy! The mele man brought us the CD and the book yesterday! I like being able to compare a book and a movie. Usually for me, the book wins because it can tell you way more than the limited time in a movie can.

The liner notes are very good, give proper attribution and also give proper respect to Gabby, Sonny, Uncle Raymond, Lena Machado and indeed, all the musicians whose music is used in the soundtrack.
