I don't think one can get a Froggy Bottom for under $1000 used or new. That's Puluke's budget. |

So I've played quite a few guitars and am gravitating toward those that are above the budget I had set (funny how that happens). In general really liked the warm tone of the Martin OM21 though the bass seemed to cover the mids and the trebles could have projected a bit more; a little more separation would have been nice too. Quite a difference from what I originally set out for, but might a Taylor GA7 (think it used to be called a 714) with cedar top provide that? The trick will be finding one to play...

So we're expanding the budget now are we? Make sure that you can set yourself a ceiling.
I was okay with the Taylor GA series. Try one of the Taylor GS models (GS5, GS6, GS7 and GS8) if you can.
You can now also begin to consider guitars from Larrivee. I've played a few L-03R's that were very nice.

As amusing this subject is I always think about some groups I have played with ( Banjo players seemed to always want to compare high dollor banjos as being better yet one of the best I heard played a Gold Tone white lady ) and Bules players seemed to say (Yes I found this thing in a dumpster only has 3 strings but I love the sound) this is such a personal choice and always remember if you miss a note your a Jazz player and miss a chord you are a blues player Me I'm a jazz/blues player who loves slack key hawiian how about that from and old red neck from the south who is TRYING to learn steel |

while I get dizzy with all the options, and surely don't know all, or remember... BUT I do tend to agree that for good value and playability, Taylor and Seagull won't have you looking to turn in your 401 K.
Lots of my friends play Taylor, on stages and recording-- and I have a parlour Seagull acoustic--small classic style. It's my travel guitar, not so good as my Goodall, but a heck of a lot less investment. They give good workmanship and solid woods for less money (Cannadian work and business ethic?) So overall, a good value for the dollar. Some Martins are narrower neck, which is harder for me to play fingerstyle, but some models are wider, and those are great for fingerstyle--but with a Martin price!
And/Or, if you have Kanikapila or other friendly gatherings, try some there, or if a really good acoustic store is handy and gives good value and service...try as many as you need, and sleep on it. (Not the guitar). |
