Aloha gang!! Ki ho`alu has been a passion of mine for many years. I put the guitars away after my son was born in 2008 and I finally pulled them out of the closet in November. Time to get back into it!!

It's sad how quickly your repertoire can disappear. I've had to really dig deep to resurrect the runs and melodies that I worked so hard to learn over the years. It's almost like rehabilitation--slack key rehab!

This forum is awesome!! I just came across it searching for something else. There aren't too many people in my personal life that play slack key guitar so this is an excellent way to exchange info. I hope I can contribute.

Bill J - if you stay Kane'ohe, then I've got to tell you that you are living on the right island. Every third Sunday of the month there is a free kanikapila at Waimea Valley Park starting at 1 pm. Come early if you need to be plugged in so the sound check can get it all right for you. It is a most wondrous thing. Planny aloha, planny regular folks, all ages, all skill levels. One of the BEST ki ho`alu players is there -- Duke Domingo. Duke is a member of this forum and lives Kalihi. Also, we have Derek (Ho'okani" who lives Kailua, Doug Fitch who lives Kailua, Carmel who lives Kane`ohe, Peter Medeiros who lives Kane`ohe, the Abrigo `Ohana who lives Waialua, Shawn who lives Palolo and whole bunch other guys. You've got built in playing buddies and Duke I am sure would be happy to share his mana`o with you for playing slack key. Timi Abrigo (16 yrs old) is also a ki ho`alu player who will blow you away.

Welcome to TaroPatch, and lucky you live O`ahu!

Howzit Billy & welcome to Da 'Patch. Auntie Wanda is right, you gotta come check us out at one of our kanikapilas. We always have a handful of ki ho'alu players in attendance and they're all willing to share their mana'o always.

Waimea Valley Kanikapila is held every 3rd Sunday of the month & this January will begin our Bishop Museum Kanikapila which will be held on the last Sunday of each month. Both start at 1pm & finish at 4pm. We're also trying to organize a slack key workshop before each kanikapila

Closer to your neighborhood is the Kualoa Ranch Kanikapila which was inspired by our Waimea Valley Kanikapila. Good friends run the Kualoa event & theirs is on the 2nd Sundays of each month. It runs from 1pm to 430pm. They have a potluck & BYOB

I'm always up for sharing the ki ho'alu mana'o, shoot me one email lidat

Hoof Hearted?...Was it you Stu Pedaso?

I put my guitar away after the birth of my son - I traded diaper changes, late night feeding and time with the boy over practice. I lost most of my chops but it all came back within a couple of weeks of solid repetition through my song list. It does take a while to shake the rust off but the rust will come off and a new outlook on the guitar may indeed emerge.

In any discipline, it can be helpful to follow the philosophy to learn something, then forget what you have learned, and learn it anew.

This is how long the road to recovery is: In 2002 I recorded myself playing by plugging my guitar into my friend's computer and using a computer-based recording studio. I burned a CD of all 14 slack key songs I could play from beginning to end. Right now, I can only play three of them in their entirety. Don't even know where to put my fingers for a few of the tunes!! Oh boy. Hopefully what you say is correct.
