Many years back I acquired a beautiful cassette of Haunani Apolonia on a solo recording. The cassette went bust and I have been looking for another recording. I hear it on the radio from time to time and would like to get a copy. Ive tried Amazon, Ebay, Itunes and no one seems to have it. Her recording of Kimo Hula is absolutely brilliant. Can you help?

The album was never issued on CD, but I picked up a copy of the cassette when I was on O`ahu recently. Haunani says she may do a CD in the near future and will re-record some of the material. |

Watch amazon.com and ebay.com -- the vinyl version of this recording comes up fairly regularly: http://www.mele.com/music/artist/haunani+apoliona/na+lei+hulu+makua%2C+na+wahine+hawai%60i/
Oddly, the fellow who owns the rights to it has repeatedly refused Haunani's request to buy him out...and he seems reluctant to re-release it on CD.
Glad to hear she's considering a new recording, as she's marvelous! |

He is a sweetheart, but probably best to thank him privately since it is widely acknowledged that the favor he did for you is not entirely legal.
I have been working on a blog post about this for some time now. It amazes me what is and is not understood about copyright law in this country. The biggest misconception is that if something is out of print, it is legal to distribute it as long as it is not done for a fee. Not true. There is only one person with the right and authority to distribute the material, free or otherwise - the owner of the copyright. Otherwise Haunani would have distributed this again a long, long time ago...
This also goes for playing such music on the radio. If it gets airplay, somebody gets paid.
The exchange of rare music with fellow fans and collectors is not uncommon. It is just done with a tasteful amount of discretion.
