Heads up all HARA voting members -- ballots went out in today's mail, so watch your snail-mailbox for yours. Read them carefully (some of the categories are extremely long), and make your choices wisely, and send your ballot in quickly. Not sure, but I think the deadline for it to be received by the CPA firm, is March 23 (date will be noted on the ballot).

from John Berger's column this morning:
Although some artists promote themselves as being “Hoku Award-nominated,” any artist and any recording project that meets the minimal requirements for eligibility goes on the (first) ballot. Membership in HARA is not required. For many years eligibility was limited to Hawaii residents but in recent years eligibility in some of the “genre” categories has been extended to include non-residents.
This year’s preliminary ballot includes 29 artists in the Male Vocalist of the Year category, 102 releases in the Album of the Year category, and 85 songs in the Song of the Year category. Five from each category will move forward to the final ballot, and one of the final five will win a Hoku.
The final ballot will go out to the voting members in April. The 2012 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards will be presented Sunday, May 27, in the Kalakaua Ballroom at the Hawaii Convention Center. |

This is the toughest ballot I've ever had to fill out, since I've heard fewer of the releases listed than in any other year (and I appreciate HARA's efforts to help rectify that situation). Got to do a lot more research than ever before, to make educated selections. |
