Does anyone know anything about Cyrus Green or one of his recordings that has "Hui Hou Kapiolani"? That CUTE Ocean Kaowili told me that that song would make my eyes well up with tears. He said that song is as though Kalakaua did not die and is responding to the song that his wife, Queen Kapiolani, wrote for him - "Ipo Lei Manu", the song he never got to hear. I would absolutely love to hear that mele because the whole story of "Ipo Lei Manu" touches my heart so much.
Mahalo for any help.

There is an earlier thread about Cyrus Green.

The song "Hui Hou O Kapi'olani" can be found on his LP simply called "Cyrus Green, put out by Mele Records LP6529. The copy that I have is not dated, and there are no song lyrics on the back cover of the album. The LP that I have does not have the original record sleeve. There is always the possibility that lyrics could have been printed on the original sleeve. Wanda check your email.
The song was written by L. Hanakahi and J.K. Spencer |

They aren't.
If it helps locate the lyrics, the haku mele is Lionel Kaipo Hanakahi. Funny. There is a gentleman by the same name on Facebook. Hmmm... As Kaipo passed away in 1997, possibly a son or grandson. Kaipo was both a Spencer and a Dudoit. What an outstanding musical lineage... |

...and this why Taropatch is my daily go-to site. You can all be counted on to feed me inspiration for my radio shows.
As noted in the original Cyrus Green thread, I am a big fan and have all recordings. Surprisingly, I've not played "Hui Hou O Kapiolani" -- but it's now been added to my playlist for Thursday's show. Such a lilting melody...mahalo for starting this thread, Wanda! |
