I was asked to accompany someone on Holei. It is an absolutely gorgeous song. I play ukulele, but this is, of course, a slack key guitar song. There is some time before the performance (small group, no pressure) and I would really prefer to do this as a slack key guitar song. This would also give me a great excuse to finally take the leap and devote some of my life to this beautiful style.
I have the chords and it begins with F Bb F C7 and then the song begins.
I am a novice but a very fast learner and completed dedicated. Since it is in F, I thought of using the F Wahine tuning, but the song isn't coming naturally for me.
Any thoughts?

I would use F taropatch. C F C F A C - same relative pitches, same shapes and chord forms and harmonized scales as taropatch, but you're in F.
But before you start you really should find out what the singer needs for a key - could need C or A or some other key regardless of the chords you found at your source.

Cyberglen, have you ever tried tuning down to F Taropatch (C-F-C-F-A-C)? That way you can play in the key of F but still use the familiar Taropatch chord shapes and runs. In that tuning, if you want to play in the key of G, just capo on the 2nd fret.
Aloha, Doug
P.S. Fran, how'd you beat me to the post? You're 3 hours behind Cali! |

I love this community! So many smart and kind people! The song is definetely in F (the key signature is one flat: Bb). But I should try to play it in C? |

You should play it in the key the singer needs. You should get your `ukulele and practice with the singer to determine the key that matches the singer's range. The notation you have found does not matter at all when you're accompanying a singer, their range is all that matters. It's vastly easier for you to change keys than for the singer to sing out of their range.
Taropatch tuning has more "V"s than "I"s (more D's than G's in taropatch G). So the F version of taropatch has more Cs than Fs, but it's still an F tuning. In fact, I think it's the strong V chord (dominant chord) that makes taropatch such a compelling tuning.

Hi Cyberglen, great advice from Doug and Fran. Good luck with this. Since you are a novice, I hope your singer can sing it in F (so you can tune Taropatch down to F Taropatch) or in G for Taropatch or A (capo up two frets in Taropatch).
Coincidentally, I was just thinking of doing Hōlei in F wahine, and then I see your post! Iʻm a soprano and Hōlei in F is perfect for me. I have worked in this tuning a fair amount with Keola, but I need and want to get better at it. F wahine will give it a very different feeling than F Taropatch. I wouldnʻt even attempt it if I didnʻt know where the I IV and V chords were, and the open and closed positions on strings 1 and 3. I will give it a whirl and see how far I get. Let us know how your attempts go too! |

"I play ukulele, but this is, of course, a slack key guitar song."
Not really following you here, how is it a "slack key song"? I actually think the songs' melody and slow feel is presented best by an ukulele. Why learn a new tuning and "take the leap" to something you are not comfortable in? That would be a disservice to the song and the singer. Not trying to discourage you, but I wasn't following your line of reasoning. |

E Al, Like Led and Cyril folks, Liko can take you back to those places we once knew as kids. You miss those days, yeah. I haven’t seen bruddah in years, but as far as I am concerned in my heart he is still in top shape and probably will be forever. And of course, the rest of his set was just as good. It would have been even more good —gooder if you will – if we was dea playing. My, how I do miss playing with him.
Go tell Kori and Jack I wasn’t able to hook up with them because I was in caregiver mode these past months. My father in law just passed away and last Friday we held the services for him at Parker Methodist here in Kaneohe. Led and Fran volunteered to play for the services. And the music was just like that – was ono music, good for the heart and soul. PM |

Eh, Peter! I stay Kailua until 5/4, except for my excursion to Maui for the Henry Allen Steel Festival 4/20-22. Give me a ring. It'll be good to see you, braddah. |
